How to extend turntable cables RCA and GND?

Postby varox84 » 10 Jun 2012 16:43

I have an old Technics SL-1401 and it has incredibly short cables, 1,5m each. Now, lets say I want to place it at least 3 meters away from my amp... What would be the proper way of extending these two cables to reach the amp? Thanks!

there is a reason they are short, long cables affect the sound of phono circuits, thye high frequencies are most affected. But you can experiment and maybe you won't find the difference a problem. From an electronics retailer, in USA Radioshack, obtain a pair of RCA couplers and a short cable with RCAs on each end, plug them onto your existing cable. The ground wire can be extended with hookup wire from the same place, use somethimng like black pvc insulated stranded tinned copper wire and then solder a length to the existing ground wire. Cut off the existing terminal and just strip the far end half an inch and twist it onto the ground terminal of your amp.

Hi

I use the same goldplated rca male to male couplers but good quality audio cable with an integral earth lead (between the two signal leads) is available. If I have to extend an arm cable, I usually fit a crocodile clip at either end for easy earth extending.
