Howdy!

I took some images of the innards of my PTA's (#127) PSU and uploaded them in high resolution here (two pages; choose "original" in pop-out menu to the right of the image to view original size):

http://zebulonminor.smugmug.com/Electronics/Pink-Triangle/19787359_sS2pdB

I will also add them to the local gallery, but then without the option to view them in full format. If anyone should need further closeups of any detail in particular that I have missed, just drop me a line and I can add them to the gallery.

Nice photo!

My PSU #187, dated 18/7/91 seems a bit different (I have been peering at it today, as I replaced all three electrolytic capacitors - 2200 microfarad, 35WV, and two 10 microfarad, 63V). I have a red LED on the PCB, and am missing the big black component just above the big capacitor.

Interesting...,

#187 @ 18/7/91, while my #127 is from 12/2/91..., that makes 60 units made during a period of roughly five months, or around a dozen per month, right...?... How long was the PTA manufactured? Could one extrapolate an estimated production run from these numbers, or are the data points to few to do that with any accuracy? Are there any earlier and later examples out there to firm up these numbers?

Sorry, mine says only 1992, it's the second version of a psu that looks much like fatboykirk's but is a little bit different. Serial number is 304.
I'll try to upload a picture later.

PTA1215 on eB*y.co.uk at the moment, perhaps someone who knows the hifi emporium can ask them to check the date in the PSU...

Haha!

I don't get it... How did Pink Triangle manage to make models even just 3 away in serial number different?

Mine is #130 13/2/91 - so only tested the day after - and doesn't have the trim controls on the front - has the preset pots directly soldered on the board. Perhaps they just made a few one way and a few the other. Perhaps different markets meant different looks and features? For the added inconvenience of internal trims, I prefer the cleaner lines.

Interesting that there's a 78 option on the later one! There are some empty component holes on #127 and #130, one 3-hole for trim pot with connection going to the speed knob and space for another resistor... With four select positions, this could be something to look into!

So now I know what the third trim pot is for too - coarse trim. Didn't know that.

Looking at #304, it looks like they added resistors by each trim pot on an individual basis, perhaps after measuring the trim pot used..

OK - now for something completely different....

This is my very late Anni PSU.. PSU serial number is #3797 but the deck doesn't have a serial number. I bought it from a dealer in Cambridge and it was their demo deck for many years so possibly was purchased direct from PT back in the day (maybe the PSU case design didn't see the light of day?). The deck has an unusual brushed steel champagne top plate and is in stained mahogany.

It used to have 4x 3.6V battery packs connected in series to make 14.4V. Each pack is just 3 x 1.2V AA Ni-Cads, again soldered in series. Maplin had an offer for 12 1.2V AA rechargables so I soldered them together as one lump to replace the duff originals.. Not sure it quite works though as the battery light only comes on for a few seconds after switching off from the mains. Could be another problem perhaps. The PSU itself works though, just not sure about battery power. I think it's supposed to switch automatically so perhaps the battery voltage sensing circuit isn't right.

As you can see, it is unusual! Based on the then current PT CD player design, using the same buttons as the Numeral/Litaural. the case is all metal with a thick alluminium top panel.

The deck uses a Premotec motor like Funk Firm so I think it must use some kind of current feedback. I wonder if it is the same as the K-Drive. I have seen another Anni using the Premotec motor, for sale a couple of years ago but with a standard PSU box - maybe the later ones were all current feedback.

I'm guessing it could be a John West design as he did stuff for them around the time.

Who's next? I'd like to see a normal battery PSU..

Well here's a few pics of my battery PSU which is, as far as I know, pretty much standard apart from the high capacity batteries, (that will run for about a week apparently!). The trim pot that is a bit bleached out with flash is marked "course".

Sorry, that should of course read "coarse".

The small PCB with the TIP31A transistor on it shows signs of serious overheating - the two power resistors would be better mounted above the board with some air under them.

Indeed. Mind you it's lasted what? 18-20 years? and hasn't melted down yet so hopefully not about to now, (I hope! He says touching some wood :) ).
