OK,,I admit I have a problem..

anything and nothing

OK,,I admit I have a problem..

Postby goatbreath » 03 Jun 2012 18:16

I enjoy listening to vinyl..But I enjoy listening to it on different turntables, some of the time, with different cartridges..Maybe enjoy is the wrong word,,feel compelled..I feel to need to tweak and adjust/fart around with things..

Why can't I just enjoy playing my vinyl and that's it,,If I have something sounding good...But it is like this tweaking monster lies beneath and is trying to burst through and twiddle all the time..

ARGHHH !!!...

Don't worry about it. I have three tables I use and have a couple different carts set up for each one. Probably have a total of 9 different combinations to listen to. And if I had more headshells I would have more yet and/or more inputs so I could hook up a few more tables. SOOOOOO......

I like different setups for different music. And just like to hear what the same album sounds like with different setups.

Call me strange.

Are/were you a musician? Being one myself I find that I can't stop tweaking electronics (especially TT's and analog synths) because it makes me feel as if I have a hand in the creative process.

Silly, I know but I find that most tweaky audiophiles I know are or were musicians.

Have to agree with Alec, you will soon realise that 6 or 7 is really not enough, 10 or 20 now you're talking!

I'm currently at 20, plus the record players, then there's the Jukeboxes....

Time to revisit / revive:

viewtopic.php?t=20740

Now if you only had 1 LP, I'd diagnose this as a problem....... :) :) :D

Fred and too many LPs and not enough tt combos...... :)

I live in a modestly sized 1 bed flat.

I just sold 2 TT's so that gets me down to 11. The most I have had in my flat is 20, but having to move them off the kitchen work surface so I could cook my tea seemed ridiculous.

It's a sickness. A malady of the mind. Still IME it beats gambling, smoking, alcohol or drukqs as an addiction. Haven't tried a sex addiction yet but I fear I may be getting too old and saggy for that now anyway.

Yep, after reading the forum posted by fscl, I am just a rank amateur   . I'll go quietly back to my corner and tell my wife that I need a few more. Hmm --- Father's Day is coming up might be a good excuse to aquire one (or three -- or more) :D

gb: I think vinyl playback just has something about it that invites to tinker/swap/tweak/mod. Especially if one is mechanically inclined, it's hard to resist that urge. Utter laziness can help quite a bit, though. ;)

bubba: *lol* I can relate to that - both, actually... ;)

Very true Brian, between that and artists. Of which I dabble in both.

I only have seven at the moment and my problem like many out there is I like to use them all at some point.

It is all rather adictive though and my wife is getting fed up with it all so the practicing of sex adiction is out of the window. Although I am unsure if the lack of one of the adictions creates the other?

HMM !!! Am I a musician,,if using musical instruments to create an anti social racket applies..Yes I am one of them..Am I tweaky about it,,I guess so..I would use a different overdrive pedal for a Les Paul than I would for a Strat etc...Different Amp / Guitar combinations for different music,,most of my guitars have different pick ups than they came with, some also have different switching and wiring..I also use effects pedals and can't get on with digital multi effects..The only digital thing I will usually use is delay,,oh!! and a digital guitar tuner pedal,,haha!!....So that is probably tweaky about it..

I have about 3000 lps,,you are right,,not enough turntables considering the size of my record collection..I need more,, =D> =D> =D> =D>

I wish I had space to have more than 3 set up at a time.. :( ..But the 3 I have set up at the moment make sense..That is maybe not a good thing though,,making sense,,practicality kills your passion for it..I still look at certain turntables and lust after them.. #-o #-o ..But wouldn't want to part with at least 5 of the ones I have..

Even the sight of certain record labels give me a certain glow,,the two tone green harvest one etc..Or the slightly cheesy but cool at the same time Decca Phase Four Stereo..At first other people nod in disapproval,,But strangely I seem to have infected them with my vinyl obsession too,,the latest recruits a 17 year old and a 24 year old,,both female too,,both have became obsessed with vinyl..The 17 year old is spreading it to her friends,,they are buying the 1970s David Bowie LPs,,going into secondhand record shops..The 17 year old is a friends daughter..My Dual CS505 2 deluxe is on loan to them,,but the daughter has went vinyl crazy..A turntable has appeared in her bedroom..The 24 year old has been to music school..She is a really good vocalist,,but grew up in the digital era..She is moving house soon and talking about having room for a bigger system and more than one turntable..

It's also good because the people I infected earlier move up to better turntables,,then the newly infected often end up with those turntables..It also isn't just the vinyl thing,,it's the Hifi thing too I seem to infect them with that too..From little mini systems,,suddenly Arcam Amps and decent speakers etc..Appear,,proper stands too..They are actually grateful to me for infecting them too,,they love the fact their music sounds so much better...

I have never forced it on any of them though,,they hear the difference for themselves..The only problem is,,I am Mr fix it when it comes to their turntables etc.. #-o

At least they're is still nodding at the valve/tube stuff  ..For Now !!

I started dabbling in vinyl again back in April, about the same time as I joined here. I had my LP collection up in the loft and an idea to start the project.

Some two and a bit months later and I have 5 turntables plus the second Saturn, three Amps 5 pairs of speakers plus two centre speakers oh and the surround sound system for the TV so there's another six speakers there and I guess another amp......

Good grief where will I be once I've been at it as long as Alec, Alan and the other old hands on here?

Hi,
goatbreath's situation is very well known here. I used to have three tonearms (RB-250, Signet KX-35, SME 309) in easily interchangeable tonearm boards, PLUS a cartridge stable! You can imagine the mornings: what shall I wear today?

Luckily my only working tonearm now is the SME, the Signet is out of order. The Rega is sold, as well as several cartridges. The urge to swap cartridges is MUCH subdued, going into once a month, unless there is an analog emergency.

Regards,
