Thorens TD-150 with Extended Plinth/Armboard

I have been modifying the wonderful and venerable Thorens TD – 150 for over 10 years. For about five years I have been fantasizing about creating the turntable you see before you. The basic idea was to extend the footprint of the turntable to allow a Linn/TD-125 sized arm board. From there, well things just took off. The gorgeous plinth is made from zebrawood, an exotic hardwood with amazing grain patterns. The armboard is Birdseye Maple, among the hardest of hardwoods. Along the way to bringing the turntable to fruition, I began to experiment with Mose-Hercules Power Supply/Speed Control units. I’d read about others using the M-H on the TD-150, and so I began to try it myself. I was very impressed. As I have stated previously, there is something about these speed control units that makes the music jump right out of the groove. I hear the same thing on this combination. To round out the unit, and make this first one extra special, I installed a brand-new SME M2-9 and a new upgrade acrylic platter. How does it sound? Definitely Linn-like using a Dynavector 20X2 High. More listening today.

Dave,
Very nice,It's great to see someone use some of the mods on TD150 that I have used also like to get a plinth like that for my TD150 with Sole sub-chassis.Is the sub-chassis stock and is the M-H and 60Hz or 50Hz model, any unseen modification .I wish I had the money for a SME M2 arm

Subchassis is stock. It's a 60hz M-H. I replied to your email yesterday, by the way.

Best,

Finished its cousin yesterday...this one was left a little more original...no external speed control, no acrylic platter. The wood is this gorgeous and dense Bolivian Rosewood (Morado)...picture does not do it justice.

Does the puck/clamp not mess with the suspension?

I use a record weight on almost all of my suspended subchassis tables...it will require adjustment of the suspension, though.

What is the weight of your weight :? ?

I have one made from brass but I find that it bottoms the suspension out on my TD150 - so I adjusted the suspension and realised that I would then always have to use the weight  Adjusted it back to normal again... I do like using the weight though (just not all the time). Perhaps I should get a lighter one fabricated...

BTW: Stunning looking tables =D>
