Just get someone with a vernier or micrometer to measure across the spindle ,then what you need is a bearing just under that size.
I have spare 7mm (0.275in) and 9/32in (0.281in) you can have if you want.

I have a Hydr Ref and I've seen advertised on ebay 'ceramic bearing upgrade' kits at a very reasonable price for 'all Michell turntables'. Has anyone tried these? Do they work and is there any fear of damage long term?

80s/90s lore advised against ceramic balls, as these tended to develop microcracks with time.

Don't know how modern ceramics fare. I do have had, experimentally, a ceramic in a GyroDec for 3-4 years now (I think), but no time/inclination to follow up on its performance and wear. Nothing is obviously wrong, but then again, nothing got obviously better.

In a Michell-designed bearing (i.e. Syncro, Gyro, and later) the ball is sacrificial and meant to wear. It is good practice to re-orient it periodically in its housing, showing a fresh spot on its surface to the bearing cup and thrust plate.

Came here to post a query on the ball bearing in my Syncro and this is the first post I found in the Michell forum!

The bearing on my Syncro is intermittently noisy and appears to have developed signs of wear. Will changing the ball bearing cure this (I changed the oil last year)? I too noticed the ceramic bearing "upgrade" on ebay. 17 quid for a ball bearing, couple of pipe cleaners and a syringe of oil seems a bit steep!

A bearing from a bicycle shop will work.

Cheers,

Thanks Alec.

Guess I'll have to dig out my Grandads micrometer to check the size!
