One thing I remember reading about laser record players is they will not read a translucent or clear record correctly. Even if I had enough money to buy one, which I don't, I don't think I would buy one.

When the first examples of the Filial laser turntable arrived in Oz I borrowed one for a weekend.
Horrifying experience. It emphasised surface noise like nothing I've heard before or since and the track location software was so unpredictable it was useless. The sound though offered promise although nowhere near as good as any cartridge, MM or MC, above $1000. So, unless there have been significant breakthroughs in this technology I haven't heard about I'll stay well clear of the things.
Nice idea though from the perspective of preserving precious irreplaceable vinyl.

No way would imgo for the lazer thing.

Best to try another turntable and a nice cartridge.

I also use a graphic equalizer with my turntable so i have more control over different pressings.

There are plenty of TT's better than your Technics. Perhaps one of them would suffice. There are many enthusiasts who have much more than $8,000 invested in their TT's. Most of them do not have laser TT's. That should tell you something.

$700 for an optional remote, doesn't make me think that the whole unit is totally overpriced... not!

Exactly my experience when I listened to one. The surface noise especially was horrendous!

You are using a so-so turntable and your planned next step is a $8000 overhyped turntable? Not a good idea.

First try to look for a better, reasonably priced, conventional turntable.

As for the laser turntable, IMO it's a complex solution to a problem that has already been overcome 40+ years ago: Record wear.

Would that be "Finial"? How long ago was that?

Dismord wrote:the track location software was so unpredictable it was useless.

Can't tell about the Finial models, never heard one. There have been a few times where I had some trouble with tracking, but this was allways with the machine cold. Any tracking problems disapear after a few minutes of warmup, which is also suggested in the user manual.

Dismord wrote:Nice idea though from the perspective of preserving precious irreplaceable vinyl.

Yes, eliminating any danger of record wear would be a reason to use one

Zebbo wrote:Exactly my experience when I listened to one. The surface noise especially was horrendous!

Clean your records well, mate, then you won't have any problems with noise whatsoever :) All lps I use on it get the looooong cleaning treatment. Still, I have lps that sound realy noisy on it, while others are dead quiet. And by that, I mean CD quiet, not a pop anywhere (... seems like I have been pampered by the digital devil for too long  ) My quess is, the noisy ones have been mistreated by previous owners, so there is litle hope for a resurection. I have damaged lps myself back in my teen years, playing them on a Hitachi table which had no adjustments at all  ...

13oots2 wrote:$700 for an optional remote, doesn't make me think that the whole unit is totally overpriced... not!

Right there, that's the main problem with the LT, IMHO. The litle raskal works, but it still costs a fortune. Yet, the pricing policy has very much improved: I paid a @#$%load of money back in '07 when I got my first model  #-o

Well, I got the LT with the remote, then almost never needed it: I keep both the LT (and the CDp) next to the listening seat, whithin arms reach, because I dont like getting up while going through LPs, a lazy b@#$@$ I am allright  !

Guys, I've been through 3 models of the LT, except for the latest one. As expected, every upgrade shows improvements, and every upgrade is costly. But the experience has me hooked. And, since it trumped the Linn, I showed the latter one the door  .

macshifi wrote:One thing I remember reading about laser record players is they will not read a translucent or clear record correctly.

I had to give up my "printed" Ride the Lightning lp, and only use the black version. Last mistake I made was when I bought a double Cocteaw Twins lp, where the second record was colored. Now I always check for the lps I buy, so as not to get any color vinyl or ones that have any images on them. Not a major problem for me though, I have very few colored lps overall.

My main complaint now with the LT is that I don't have enough time to listen to it. And I do spent a lot of time scrubing, instead of listening. On the up side, once cleaned, I naver had to clean a record twice. And the moto is right on the spot : no contact, no wear !

Hope I've helped a bit,

Charlie

Blimey you're the only person I've ever heard of who actually OWNS one of these! Best be careful or your govt will be coming round to your place for a loan...
Incidently, the noisy record wasn't mine, mine are always kept spotless as I can't abide noise.

I never heard one of those but I'd reckon that for that kind of money you could get a set up that sounds much better than any Laser TT .

I remember drooling over these a decade ago.... But, isnt a purely analog signal path one of the primary reason for vinyl preference? The lack of digitization and DACs? It is for me.

magnet, the company swears that the signal is kept analogue all the way. I'm not a technical person, so I couldnt tell, even when I opened it up and was staring at the circuit boards... :)
