LINN AXIS desperately seeking advice

Postby taylor1867 » 11 May 2012 14:21

So I've purchased a Linn Axis for £140. The seller who lives just down the road said it would be fine to return if it was faulty...

I got it home and it has got a rumble when it starts and when it is switched to 44, it takes a few seconds to get to speed and with the light a brighter green when it hits 44rpm. The seller hasn't used it for 5 years.

It needs oiling i think or is it faulty electronics? It's the green light that starts dimmer then when it hits speed goes greener is the thing that worries me.

Any advice would be massively appreciated.

Cheers!

Before checking everything else, if you have rumble, have you removed the transit screw?

I didn't check but I'm 99% sure it wasn't there. The plate wouldn't move at all if the screw was in though, would it?

I've been told that the Linn Axis does take a few seconds to switch between speeds. Can anyone verify this please?

Cheers,

Yes, the Axis does take a few seconds to change speed. If it's not the transit screw that's the problem I'd lift out the inner platter and clean, oil and refit the bearing. You could also clean the running surfaces for the belt and check if it's loose?

Hi

The Axis has a motor drive circuit that spins the platter up to speed with maximum power, and then reduces the power to minimise vibration. I suspect that the change in intensity of the LED is normal and reflects the altered state of the circuit. Mind you, I've never owned one.

The problems when starting could also perhaps be symptoms of a loose belt, in which case a replacement Linn belt would help (these are readily available).

I've had an axis for over 20 years and still use it nearly daily at my desk. Yes, it does take a couple seconds to get from 33 to 45 when holding the button down And, the light is brighter @ start then dims once at speed.

you can and should take the platters apart and make sure that they spin freely without the motor running. When starting the Linnie dealer gave it a light nudge, so I do it too.

There is a grey plate that needs leveled. Its the thing inside the black wooden surround (plinth). The screws in the feet turn to raise the 3 sides up and down. You want the grey part to be about 1/8" above the black frame but level. NOT screwed down tight or you'll defeat the suspension.

What arm is on yours and what cartridge do u use?

The only thing that needs oiling is the spindle. The oil may be gunky or may have spilled out during transport.

some axis power supplies go faulty and this can cause starting and smooth running problems
you can get the power supply serviced no problem

Rumble or shuddering on start-up can mean that the belt is worn...

get a new belt first...

BTW. The Axis is a great table!

A bit of TLC seems the way to go. Change the belt, clean the sub-platter and change out the bearing oil. Should take you somewhere down the road to reducing the rumble.

Great TT I agree, but do remember to disconnect from the mains supply when not in use as they are notorious for the PSU dying on you otherwise. Alternatively place a simple on/off switch (similar to a light) on the power input lead which saves having to pull out the plug or switch the actual mains socket off all the time.
