MC cartridges prone to hum problems with SL-12xx?

Postby resu » 19 May 2012 17:46

Are there any MC carts that are known to have hum probs with the Techie?
Is a metal cart body (aluminium/steel) any help? What about medium/high output?

I've had no problems with Denons and ATs.

That's good news MR.F. I have an almost unused DL-304 that I could keep until I get something better - like a AT-33PTGII or Ortofon Kontrapunkt B =P~

This hum problem topic pops up every now and then but I have never actually seen clearly stated any cartridge names or types...MCs of course but which :?

It often goes like this:

Of course I could and should ask CL himself.

The 304 should work brilliantly on the Audiomods arm. I had no hum of any kind with a 301MKII on my Technics so I don't think the 304 would either. Of course you could always get an external PSU (if you haven't already) to remove any doubt.

Denon DL-301II has considerably higher output than DL-304. It's 0,4mV against DL-304's meagre 0,18mV. That's why I'm a bit concerned. Also, some people here have had hum problems with DL-304.
I have used several DL-304s through the years, no problems - hum or other - but anyway maybe it's time to try something else now :)

I need to update this one as apparently it is not MCs that are the problem as apparently no MC will hum, appologies for bad info  . Actually the only cart I have that has a tiny amount of hum when the cart is near the transformer is the Decca super gold which is not a MC. It is high output carts that are unshielded that are the problem hence my Decca so no MCs will be an issue. I should update the relivent thread too.

Thanks CL. No problem not anymore at least. It's really nice that you kindly clarified the case. I think there's a lot of misunderstanding around this topic so it's important it's cleared out.
