Dual CS-435 restoration

Some time ago I purchased one old, non-functional Dual CS-435 for pennies. I intended to use it for experiments, occasional cleaning of my records and for learning purposes (I mean disassemble and never put together again, as I was doing to my stuff when I was child )



Turns out that the turntable was not in such bad shape as it seemed. Loosen belt, cartridge with stylus worn out so badly that the tip looked like a ball point pen, dust cover scratched all over the place but without cracks or deep cuts. So I decided to put it back to life.


Chassis is made of chipboard. On bottom plate there are several rubber feet placed in the "dish", one of them filled with sticky vaseline-like substance. Tonearm wire is soldered to small circuit board, and from there continues the wire with cheapo plastic cinch at the end.



DC motor is on the worst place I can think of, right between the arm and the spindle.

I decided to reinforce the chassis first. Both top and bottom plates were first treated with dispersion, after drying covered with "tecsound" - adhesive bitumen plates used mostly in automotive

Same I did with platter - the original one is light ringing plate made of aluminium. I put as much as possible with respect to space available, so the material does not collide with motor assembly. plastic subplate got covered as well, leaving points of contact with alloy plate. Alloy plate was "statically ballanced" by hanging it over flat surface

Old wire was removed easily, putting new one in place was a brain surgery

I threw away the chip board and soldered new tonearm wire directly to new RCA cinches. I also moved the power cord input further away from cinches, drilling new hole few centimeters on the right of original position. Only wire that stays 'hardwired' is ground.




New belt put in place. I did also upgrade the power adapter, original one has 12V/20mA specs which I (accidentaly) replaced by 12V/200mA. Wow what a difference, lot more horsepowers for the engine

I restored the dustcover using the abbrasive polish for worn-out car paint.

Finaly, here's the result:



Equipped with new Audio-Technica AT95e cart. Probably not the best match, as the tonearm is vely low mass.
