WD40 for glue

Postby triphop » 08 May 2012 18:44

I remember Alec (alec124C41) mentioning in the GEM Dandy thread using WD40 to get rid of pesky glue. I had figured WD40 would be un-wise to use and akin to Goo Gone but the make up of the two seems to me now that WD40 would be ok for glue.

Basically, if I wood glue clean a record, but residue persists, and then I re-woodglue that spot or side and am still left with a new residue, can one over-clean with wood glue and start removing "the good stuff"? I'm up for using WD40 on this last spot and then rinse with my 4-1 distilled/isoprop spray.

Any suggestions?

The PVA wood glue must be allowed to completely dry before peeling, to avoid residue. I would guess at least a full day.
I used the WD-40 for some very sticky glue residue, not for PVA residue.

Alec

Ah yes.. I had one record with glue from a re-sealable outer flap that got on it. If ever I encounter such a need for it, I will certainly try WD40 over my Goo Gone experiment; the results were great, though I wonder the long term effects of Goo Gone.

Likewise, I imagine you washed/rinsed the record afterward to get the WD40 off? Would WD40 be BAD to use for PVA glue residue? Thanks Alec!!!

I would try PVA glue to remove PVA glue. It has to be thin but thick enough to hang together when dry, and it must be completely dry all the way through. Don't rush it.
