Turntable solely for 78's

So I'm looking to buy an additional turntable for my 78's,
I have been hunting a Lenco 75/78 but can't seem to find one...
Anyone have any other suggestions, lets say around the $400 mark?

Well if you want a turntable to play 78's I recommend
the stanton st-150. This is what I use to play my 78's,
it even has digital coaxial output.

Thanks for the suggestion BBW, but I'm looking more for a TT that can give me multiple speeds around 78rpm... I don't think that Stanton can.

The best 78 turntable you can find in the USA is the Technics SP-15 paired with a suitable tonearm. Might be findable in your budget. Has 9% pitch range. And excellent as an all rounder. The Rek-O-Kut better models are superior to the Stantons.

Hi Aron,

If my turntable did not do 78s I would jump on this machine which Jake linked. There are a couple of things to consider however.

The seller did say it won't hold speed. Is it the belt? Maybe, but it could also be the motor control board. I'm pretty sure I could fix it. Are you comfortable working on analog electronics? There is a service manual in the library but it is for the two speed machine. I have to believe the three speed machine is similar however the issue may be in the circuitry which is not well documented (here).

Cartridges are swappable somewhat but you have to disconnect and connect the wires. Way more trouble than a standard SME type head-shell.

I'm comfortable working with anything that I know how to do I don't know analog electronics, but if it would be easy fix then I could learn... What kind of work are we talking about?

In regards to the cartridges I plan on putting on a Stanton 500 leaving it at that, and just switching needles, so I don't think that would be too much of an issue.

Do you guys still think this is a good idea for me?

Hi Aron,

It could be as simple as speed control pots being dirty I which case spraying them with control cleaner and working them back and forth will take care of it. There could be failed solder connections on the board. At $50 I think it is worth the risk. If the control cleaner doesn't get it I would say a next step may be to re-flow the soldered connections on the board.

I think the Stanton cartridge is a good choice as an arsenal of styli from Expert Stylus are available for it. I saw some alarming news for us fast spinners on Audio Asylum that Gibson which is the parent company of Stanton will not be making any more cartridges. When what is in inventory is gone that's it. I'm wondering what Expert stylus will do in response to this. I don't yet have a Stanton cartridge but I figured one was in my future with several styli from Expert Stylus. I'm hoping that this news is not true.

Hello,

Your first choice,the heavy platter Lenco models,was a good one.

With a bit of patience you will eventually get one,your $400 could buy a deck and a decent arm. These decks are built like tanks and are very well respected.

If you have minimal DIY skills the Lencos also lend themselves to easily been tweaked, with excellent rewards.Spares are also widely available.

Buying in a hurry often leads to disaster.

It's good that you caught that. The specs listed had the 78 speed in parentheses for the mark II version.

I agree totally with Victor, and I play my 78's on a Lenco 75, modded arm and Ortofon OM cartridge body with a 78 stylus.

I'm definitely gonna keep looking for the Lenco as it's my first choice, but I've been on the look out for a while now without luck ... So I'm opening myself to other suggestions.
