Patience my friend!

Can't see why Rega would specify this, just do up so cartridge is firmly secured. No need for silly amounts of torque as you are likely to damage the cartridge body and arm bearings.

Do they supply the torque wrench as well?

no, but the manual says that a torque wrench is needed. I think it's strange.

tighten up the bolts too much can damaged the cartridge but too loose and it sounds warm and lush. But somewhere in between there is an optimum. But at what torque?

The torque required would vary depending upon the material used to manufacture the screws and headshell, as well as the catridge. They only need to be tightened enough to pinch up and not come undone. If it sounds "lush" tighten it a little more. Maybe you could tune it by ear and let us know the optimum torque ?

Why would Rega specify a torque wrench, then fail to provide the required torque figure?

yes youve got it. Let your dealer do it for you says the manual. im sure that 9 out of ten dealers don't have a torque wrench. It is so simple. Rega has done all the research and they know the optimum amount of torque so why don't specify it??

That explains it: Rega sells the wrench at considerable cost. It looks like a break type (or maybe not), but without any adjustable settings....

How does one check if it's properly calibrated? As far as I know, all precision torque wrenches require periodic calibration.

Have you contacted Rega to ask them ?

Absolutely correct; in the aerospace industry, in addition to periodic calibration, we always check the wrench is set correctly before every use, against a calibrated guage.

Since it is apparently so critical in this case I would be very concerned about the accuracy of the wrench.

Engineers method; tighten to breaking point, then slacken off a quarter turn. And before anyone tries it, DON'T.
