Noob question on amplifier

Hi Guys

Ive just started collecting vinyl and recently purchased a pro-ject debut turntable. I have a Pioneer amp that has phono connections and an Onkyo amp without phono.

Question is should I run the deck to the Pioneer or purchase a pre-amp for the Onkyo. Ive been told that Onkyo is a good make.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Why not begin with what you have already, set up the Pioneer (they make good stuff too) and see how you like the quality, then decide what you need.

Generally amplifiers tend to sound similar, at least solid state ones do, what can make a much bigger difference to the sound is the speakers, that is where money well spent pays dividends.

The Pioneer is an old one circa 04 its model name is Pioneer a209 and the Onkyo is a tx-sr500e also quite old. both in good nick.

Thanks I will set up so long with the Pioneer but just want to find out if its better to get a preamp for the Onkyo. Didnt know the speakers is where the quality is at. I have a home Bose system with some mini speakers and a sub woofer.

Your Bose system should sound just fine; but in mine and others experiences subwoofers can play hell with turntables. You may not have any issues, depending on placement, your chosen listening volume, and type of music, etc. If you have problems (for instance I was getting a lot feedback from mine) you can try removing the dust cover entirely while listening. And a thick rubber or foam mat under the tt wont hurt either. In the end, I just set up a vinyl only system in my bedroom and let the home theatre be just that.

If you have the room, you can try both.......

Hook the Project to the Pioneer phono inputs --> Bose Speakers, listen.

Then hook PJD --> Pioneer phono --> Use Pioneer Line / Tape Out --> Onkyo Line Input --> Bose Speakers, listen.

guys thanks for the help so far. I need to bother your much experienced brains a little more.

the speakers I have are from a Bose Acoustimass 5 series speaker system. Comes with 4 cube speakers that plug into the Accoustimass Module. Looks like a big box/woofer bass speaker.

now out of the module comes this plug with two rca's at either end that plug into the bose lifestyle model 5 music centre which has a cd player and all the usual buttons for aux, tape and am/fm. its labelled audio input.

my question is what do i plug into the amplifier since the speaker cables are already connected to the module. unfortunately i can't connect the PJD to the music centre as it has no phono.

You'll need a separate phonograph pre-amp. These can range from very cheap to very expensive. You'll end up plugging the turntable's RCAs into the pre-amp and then the pre-amp's RCAs into the line in on the Bose lifestyle thingy....assuming it has one.

There are plenty of folks here who can recommend a good phono stage at whichever price point you want, but I can't because I haven't bought one yet (I run an old Hitachi receiver with a built in phono stage and my CD player is in its only line in).
