Watson Labs Model 10 speakers, designed and built by Mike Wright, creator of the original Dayton-Wright Electrostatics.
These speakers are so transparent, with 15 to 23000 Hz response, easy to drive, forgiving of placement, and built to last.

Cheers,
Alec

Infinity RS-IIb's are my favorite speakers. Also have a pair of Sony SS-M7's that are real keepers, too.

I can understand if you're in love with the bottom end but I found mine had a 'quacky' mid-range that I could never get used to.

Usher BE10's ( the earlier model with Beryllium mid & treble drivers.)
Soundlab ULP X. (Alhough they really need a huge room with high ceilings to work properly)
Tannoy 'Westminsters'.
and for smaller rooms, such as a bedroom, and those on a tight budget who still want to Rock & Roll, Jamo C803’s .

PSB Synchrony One. Even better than my PSB Stratus Golds, which I thought were wonderful.

I don't seem to have encountered that with my speakers. They have a very open, clean and accurate midrange to my ears. No quackiness here... You maybe had a bad pair or they didn't suit your room or electronics? What model were they?

'Reference Standard Transmission Line' . Looks like the Studio 1's are a different model. Mine are out in the garage run by an ancient Sugden integrated for the entertainment of visiting brats who want to play trash bubble gum pop which I can't stand. The openings to the transmission lines I've sealed with chicken wire as a family of mice made a home inside one of them. When I ran them as my main speakers I first used a Counterpoint SA5 pre-amp and an Audio Research D70 power amp , later on a Luxman Solid State power amp (M02?). I still think the have astonishingly good low bass. Before these I ran IMF 'Compact Monitors' which I thought had the same peculiar quacky mid range.

Still use my good old Brit made Rank Wharfedale "Super Linton" 30WD on a daily base.
Had to renew the condensers inside but sounds fabulous now, well matched to my Dual 1019 (another antique bought at the same time in 1969) with Shure M97xE cart and the Jico SAS stylus I just fitted an hour ago ( Currently testing it with Miles Davis' "Kind of Blue": awesome! even though in mono).
Tried Marantz HD 440 and Sony bookshelve speakers, but I didn't like their bass too much and got back to the Linton's.
Dual 1019/Shure M97xE/Jico SAS stylus.
Thorens TD 146 & TD 166/Ortofon OMB5 and OM40 carts.
Marantz Mod 6170/Marantz E 5000 cart.

Blimey mate, those TDL "References" were the "top-of-the-line" studio monitors produced by TDL. They may be worth a fair bit of money to someone. Nice. But, yes, they are a completely different beast to my little Studio 1s. Mine only have a single woofer and tweeter, but they are still a TL design and for the size of them, their bottom end is stupendous.

Maybe those TDL Refs were just too much for your room and got some terrible modes going to produce that "quacky" sound. :?

Cheers.

Stacked "older" orignal Advents. Still wish I had mine from decades ago. Didn't "image" but they did sure "moved air".

Magneplanars, any model, Gotta have power, gotta have room, gotta not own cats. Older vintage ones do not age well and need rebuilds.

Yamaha NS-1000, No other japanese speaker system and no other Yamaha speaker did what these did. I wish I had picked up a pair when I worked in a shop that sold them when they were new. About as uncolored sound as I can imagine coming from 3 way cones and domes in a box. (The Yamaha NS-10 on the other hand are on my list of worst)

Dahlquist DQ 10, need careful rebuild/update with that piezo tweeter replaced by something, anything. When they are right they image like mad.

Proac Tablettes, any vintage - They don't do ANY bass and with the wrong solid state amp they can make ears bleed but, in a moderate to small room with some help in the bottom end from a good subwoof, they do music.

Don't think I can blame the room they were used in, it's huge and other dynamics, some larger and Soundlab ULP X stats worked well in that setting . The room has very high ceilings and an appropriate amount of diffusion and absorption treatment. My present Usher BE 10's (+ a pair of Velodyne DD15 +'s) sound wonderful in it and there's sure no sign of any quacking. My suspicion is the crossovers on the References were overly complex and compared to today's lacking in musicality. I did enjoy them though for a number of years - my theory is speakers don't so much break-in as our brains learn to decode different distortions as we become familiar with them. Just a guess.
Anyhow, the References aren't' wasted as when visiting brats aren't' torturing them with their MP3's they get wheeled out into the back yard for parties. I'm one of those old audiophools who won't let anyone get drunk & stoned near my main system. Too many expensive accidents in the past.

Allways been a sucker for Kef Reference series speakers.
I have a set of 1997 Reference Model 4 speakers at the moment. Love them, but they need current stable amps and room to breathe to sound at there best.
