Motor upgrade for Platine Verdier

Postby Pani » 08 Apr 2012 18:03

I am looking to upgrade the motor + belt drive of my Nouvelle Platine Verdier. I do find the PRAT to be not good enough with the current motor system. I have been recommended to first try and supply the existing motor with battery power. I am going to try it out very soon. But still I am looking for a more complete solution in this area. If there is a more comprehensive motor + belt solution which lift the dynamics and PRAT of the Verdier without degrading its tonal qualities (which is the best I have heard from any TT till date) then I will seriously like to look into it. The options I know of are:

1. Teres belt drive motor with Mylar tape
2. RedPoint Motor with 1/2" tape tape
3. TW Acustics motor with its belt
4. .....please feel free to add

I am still not sure which one among these is a good choice for Verdier. Forum inmates, please suggest with your experiences.

Had never heard of this turntable before today, did a quick Google search and came up with this http://forums.naimaudio.com/displayForumTopic/content/1566878606770839

I think the TT is pretty rare and replies are going to be few and far between for this question, I think that Google is going to be your best friend here. Perhaps it isn't the TT that is the source of your problems but other equipment in your setup.

The Teres and the Redpoint are really the same thing. The Scheu Analog turntable was once made in kit form. Three people worked on the design (can't remember the 3rd) and then then issued their own turntables. You have a state of the art turntable and you are looking at a state of the art motor. I think the Teres battery combo would be one of the best, and another possibility would the the Walker turntable motor, and lastly the VPI 300 RPM motor with the speed controller. All of this motors are regulated so that the motor is absolutely on exact speed, so you can't go wrong with either motor. I've always liked the idea of the battery operated Teres combo, but that is just a personal reference. You can see all of the above motors for sell on Audigon, so you might want to check. Hope this helps.

If there was ever a turntable where motor noise should be irrelevant it's this one, the platter is so massive it will smooth out almost anything. Are you you are not looking for deliberately fast like Rega tend to do?

You might try the Stand Alone Motor Assembly (SAMA) from VPI alond with their motor controller. The controller is pretty expensive though. They also sell a rim drive assembly that might do what you are looking for.

Every little change I do to the motor is audible. For example:
1. Changing power cord to the motor
2. Isolating the motor on spikes
3. Using a different belt material

So while the Platine has a massive platter to handle motor related jitters it is also a very revealing TT. That is exactly the reason why I thought about upgrading the motor. Before buying a new motor from Teres I want to try powering the existing Platine motor through battery. Finally it will be the motor upgrade.

Surprising, I would have thought that the real penalty of a massive platter would be more bearing generated noise, due to the high load

That it doesnt have. Very very silent. I suppose Verdiers are very well known for their bearing.

That is their skill, any idiot can make a massive platter - metal is cheap enough that it only really affects shipping cost. Making a quiet heavy duty bearing is very hard. Isn't the Verdier using a magnetic bearing?
