What was your first record?

Postby Fishtails » 19 Apr 2012 12:20

Hi people

It's time to think back before time began and remember what the first record you ever owned was. It could have been a gift or bought yourself.

Mine was actually not so bad. The Beatles double red album compilation. My grandparents bought it for me for Christmas when i was about 6 or 7 and I still have it and play it to this day. So,that's over 30 years.

Hi,
the first record I purchased was "The Student Prince" with Mario Lanza. A 45 rpm, extended play issue.

British punk band. Bought in 1979. I remember the day like it was yesterday. Lovely sunny day in the school holidays out shopping with Mum. I slipped off into the record shop whilst she waited to be served at the fish counter. Must have been Thursday. We always had fish on Thursday!

First record? I don't remember, probably some Elvis 45 when I was a pre-schooler.

First LP...

I still have it, though it is trashed.

2. Kiss - Double Platinum
3. Kiss - Ace Frehley solo

Still have these as well.

It was a 10 min. walk to the record store when I was a kid. I eventually worked there when I got older. These days it is a pet supply store. :(

The first record I remember buying was "Stranded In The Jungle" by The Cadets. I think I was only 5 or 6 at the time but I'd heard that tune on the radio and liked it so much that I pestered my Mom to get me a copy. I still like that song...."Meanwhile, back in the States..."

First 45 rpm singles:
Tom Dooley, Kingston Trio
Bird Dog, The Everly Brothers
Peter Gunn, Duane Eddy

We already had Brubeck's "Time Out" and Henry Mancini's "Music from Peter Gunn" in the house.

First LPs
Jimmy Rodgers (S/T, the "Honeycomb" Jimmy Rodgers) on Roulette
The Everly Brothers Best on Cadence
The Kingston Trio at Large on Capitol

Followed fairly quickly over the next few pre-Beatle years by these I do remember:
Walk Don't Run, The Ventures (and most of their next twenty albums)
Let There Be Drums, Sandy Nelson (and more of his)
Midnight in Moscow, Kenny Ball and his Jazzmen (still a great album of British "trad" jazz)
Bobby Vee with Strings and Things (won on a radio station contest)
Bulldog, The Fireballs
Pipeline, The Chantays
Wipeout, The Surfaris
The Wham of That Memphis Man, Lonnie Mack
Jack the Ripper, Link Wray on Swan
Telstar, The Tornados on London
The Benny Goodman 1938 Carnegie Hall Concert
The Essential Gene Krupa on Verve
The Dave Brubeck Quartet at Carnegie Hall
Dance On, The Shadows (Canadian release, think I have the right title)
Everything is A-OK with The Astronauts
Surfing with The Astronauts

I also had LPs by Marty Robbins, Johnny Horton, Bobby Darin, Buddy Holly, Johnny Mathis, and of course Roy Orbison (all his early work).
Being a beginning drummer, I was big on jazz and rock instrumentals.

I still enjoy this music, despite being more into jazz, prog, psychedelic and celtic/folk these days.

The first records I ever bought were:

Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon, Animals, Wish You Were Here, and The Wall.

I was completely appalled that they were sitting in Half Price Books just begging some stupid kid in my town to buy just to throw the records away and stick the covers on their wall (yes I know stupid kids who do this). So I rescued them, bought an old turntable and haven't looked back.

That was six months ago and I have become completely addicted to vinyl (I'll buy a few records instead of ammunition and range passes, it's that bad). And I haven't seen a Floyd record at that store since. Perfect timing I guess.
Are we there yet? No, never there yet. Keep it rollin', we're paid by the mile.

first single was brian and michael, with their seminal, matchstick men and matchstick cats and dogs. bought it in boots the chemist in 1977, on pye records. first album was the rather more fashionable blondie with parallel lines in 1978. still have them both and might well go play them now.

ps. sorry about the lack of caps, but the shift key doesn't work on my laptop. modern technology. says it all...
