Dual 601 tonearm issues

Postby norriemal » 12 Apr 2012 13:17

I recently picked up a Dual 601 with a Shure V15 mkiii. Turns out the tonearm wiring has been "dabbled" with and it seems to be pulling to the side. I don't know much about this turntable and wonder wether it is worth trying to sort out the tonearm? The auto return mechanism has all been stripped out already.

Also, the V15 is a Dual specific mount and I was wondering if there is any interchangeable headshell that takes the clip in Dual cartridge and then will fit an SME type fitting tonearm?

All opinions welcome.

In general the 601 is a good belt driven deck with a good tonearm.
But if its worth to rewire the arm if necessary i dont think so.
Probably you just grab another 601 f.e. with a defective motor and
make one good one out of two defective ones. There are plenty of
601s on german ebay and they are cheap if not in top condition.
Ive done that with two 1249er and it surely was worth the effort.

As far as a special adapter headshell is concerned i never saw such
thing. The V15/IIIs with Dual- "Klickbefestigung" are specialy made
for Dual.

Good advice, thanks I'll just keep my eyes open. Are there any other good Duals that will take the clip in cart fitting?

Many of the Duals made in the early to mid-1970's used much the same cartridge holder. 601, 1215S, 1241, 1228. The likely best of these 4 would be the 601 and the 1228. I was told that the motor in the 1241 was interchangable with the 601. Too bad that Dual made so many fully automatic Turntables when semi-automatic and manual turntables would have been the best options.

Thanks for that it gives me a few more options to look out for. I have some litz wire left over from a previous project so I might try an external rewire on the arm. It seems to have some sort of modification to earth the arm tube and this is causing it to pull.
