In Dire Need of Help!!!

Postby blinky221 » 10 Apr 2012 02:46

Hi,

My girlfriend just received a second hand JVC QL-5A turntable. It seems to be in really good condition and plays well, until it gets to the end of the album. Since it has an auto-return function, I expected it to just bring the arm back to its resting position. It does this, but then brings the arm back to the end of the record, drops it, then drags it back across to the spot where a 45 would start.

We're new to the beautiful world of turntables and have no clue what to do!! Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Thanks

Hi. The world of auto mechanisms is truly weird!

It used to think it was all so simple but if you open a turntable you will be shocked at the engineering that goes into these things. And looking at it after 30 minutes you will still have no idea how it works !

I had a similar issue with a jvc I owned.

Someone here may be able to better help you, but my first suggestion would be to unplug it , take the base off and then use sewing machine oil on all the parts of the auto mechanism.

If that doesn't work I usually just rip the auto mech out and use the turntable as a manual instead of auto.

But wait and see what others say.

Good luck!

have you checked on here for the owners manual ? They might have it or one for a similar model . There may be some adjustments ... or not ? The joy of auto tables ! I have tried to fix one of mine and like mentioned the innards are really complex with many little gadgets and cogs , wheels , springs , switches and motors. But a clean of any electrical switches might help and lube as mentioned .Good luck

Whatever is supposed to tell the mechanism that it should shut off is clearly not working,or working fast enough, to shut things down when they should. Probably a hardening up grease thing, but its hard to diagnose at a distance. Is there a Vinyl Engine member (or an Audio Karma member) near by? If they pipe up volunteering to take a look, that would be great, other wise, you are going to have to learn a lot of useful skills, but the library may have service manuals close enough to guide you.

Thanks for the input everyone. i ended up going off of a tip from another forum. what i discovered was a foam pad on the auto mechanism had just disintegrated from old age. All i had to do was glue a new piece of foam on and, presto, it works!!!
