Amp recommendations anybody?

Postby elfranco » 16 Apr 2012 16:38

Hello. I am new here. Fantastic site and really helpful people.

I am running my old Dual CS505-2 TT with my old Cyrus One amp through some Heybrook HB 1's. Not exactly high end I know but great in my summerhouse! I find the upper registers a bit harsh and have read this from other Cyrus One owners. Bass and midrange and soundstaging and detail are all really nice but the top end 'attack' gats a little tiring. Any amp recommendations to smooth this out a bit? Many thanks. Frank.

Depends on price. Tubes may work well with the HB1's. not sure what the efficiency is on the HB1's though. provided you don't listen at very loud volumes 15watts may be suitable.

else maybe something from musical fidelity A1, B1, etc.

I like Quad amps, if you can find one at a suitable price. A Linn Intek integrated isn't the last word in hifi but had can be had at a good price if you're lucky. Neither of those would be considered harsh.

I don't know the speakers unfortunately so can't give a specific recommendation.

A second-hand Musical Fidelity amp will give a nice warm sound and work well with your Dual and Heybrooks.

Looking forward to collect a Creek like that one myself :P

My bet's that the ocasionally harsh treble lies in the HB 1's tweeter. As much as I like the Heybrooks -those boxes are great fun!- their dome tweeter's a bit unrefined. Has always been so.

What cables are you using? DNM Reson by any chance? I'd try some cheap and cheerful OFC cable, like Van Damme Blue Studio or plain thick 322 stand one, before bying a new amp. The Cyrus is a peach.

Of course the above-mentioned Creek CAS 4040 will cost you less than a pair of terminated cables. It's indeed a bargain and would sing wonderfully with the HB 1's, even though I doubt you'd come off with that slighly abbrasive treble.

The Creek 4040 is a really really nice amp. I've got an early one and I preferred it to both my Linn Intek and my Audiolab 8000A.

Just a nice thing, again not the last word in amplification but really nice.

Incidently if you're interested I could sell you either my Linn Intek or my Audiolab both of which are currently surplus. I'm keeping the Creek.

The Audiolab might not be the best choice if the Heybrooks are a little edgy, but you'd be welcome to try either/both if you're local to me at all.

I have a creek 4040 for sale, but its not cosmetically great, and needs a fuse on one chanell and a little deoxit on the switches.
yours for £25.

Many years ago :tired:......i used to work on Saturdays in a local hi-fi shop and we sold shedloads of Dual CS505's with A&R A60 amps. The A60 had a real smooth but detailed top end unlike the the aggresive top end of the Cyrus One (which made yer ears bleed)
There are a number of A60's on the well known auction site as I type
