Audacity play through?

I am ripping some albums using Audacity and the program records and works well as can be expected using only my turntable plugged into a imic using USB input on my G4 Mac. My question is, can I monitor the sound coming into Audacity before I hit the record button? Right now I can only hear as the program is capturing the music.

You can hit Record and Pause, and you will hear the feed.

I think there is a menu item somewhere to do that, but I haven't looked for it. But if you click "pause" then "record" your audio will play through, you can set levels, etc. Then click "pause" again to start the recording.

Without opening Audacity and looking myself, search through the menus and find "Enable Software Playthrough" .

Then, if you hover the curser under the output level indicator bar, right click (with windows) and choose "Start Monitoring".

It one of things that once you find it, you'll always use it. I do.

where the recording level icon is at, click on it to monitor and set the level. without hitting the record button.
