Count Basie compilation rec?

Postby cultjake » 10 Apr 2012 17:37

Does anyone know of a good Count Basie compilation?

I don't want to run after the countless number of albums
under his leadership.

Thanks,
Jake

Recommend BLUES BY BASIE on Columbia records. Every cut is a cut.

If I had to have only one Basie album it would be "Super Chief".

As a compilation of '30s and '40s air checks and studio work it does not seem to have the big collector demand and you should be able to find this two LP set in decent shape for not big bucks. Dated sonics if that matters to you.

With more "modern" sonics, I also really like "Atomic" Basie (but do get it in mono),

Seconded for Super Chief. I also enjoyed The Essential Count Basie vol. 3, but I'm to understand it's sourced from digital.

Bumping up this old thread.

Just playing "Count Basie Classics" Columbia CL 754, a compilation LP of 1940s studio sessions released in 1955.

On a quick look at the track list there seems to be no overlap with cuts on "Super Chief". Pretty decent sound considering the 1940s source material. Discogs lists an LP at $80(!) but I got a very nice VG+ Six Eye for $8 from my used record store.

Worth picking up if you see a clean copy for not stupid money.
