I'm back with floorstanders again. I don't have any prejudice or preconceptions about either floorstanding speakers or stand mounted speakers, I just happen to love the ones I have now. They're Vienna Acoustics "Strauss" coupled with an REL Britannia 3 subwoofer.

I love my Tangent RS4 stand mounted speakers, which I purchased new in the 1970's and will never part with, but when a pair of B&W 802 series 80 matrix speakers came available for £50 I was converted to floor mounts!!

So which category did the Magnepan owners check? Planar, panel or quasi-ribbon are not among the choices.

Currently a lovely pair of Rega RS5 in the living-room, especially hand-plucked by a much respected member of this forum  .

But then I also own two venerable Cabasse Dinghy 221 and a pair of huge DIY horns, the VincHorns : 1'60m tall, so I got my ultimatum and changed to something smaller... just before one of 'em was about to kill one of my kids  !

A Pair of Recent Sony 3-way with 8" woofer sitting on top of older floor mounts with slight angles. I think they are some hardwood. I picked those up ataudio convention at Giants Stadium some years ago.
In storage I got a pair of Kenwood's 777S that I bought in 1978. 55 pounds each. When I have some room to put those, I will take them out of storage. They sound great!

Love 'em! I have the 836, thought about 807's, but figured with stands it's the same floor space.
I haven't found a better speaker for the $ than focal...
Too much to list, I sell the stuff, so most of it was free (the only way I can afford my addiction)!

Yo speaker seekers:

Focal also makes excellent, but very expensive raw drivers that are available in U. S. from Zalytron in Mineola, New York. They make an excellent MTM kit using Focal drivers that comes in about $2,000 by the time you are through. It's way over my head, but...

http://www.zalytron.com/

I have not used Focal drivers, but I hear they are in a similar class with Dynaudio drivers like mine, so I expect that the finished speaker systems will also be very good.

And good luck from that cheap old box builder,

Joe Z.
