Led Zeppelin 1 Advice Needed Please!

Postby bardyboo » 09 Apr 2012 20:16

Hi all,

I am new to this so please bear with me but I need some advice on a Led Zep 1 LP we found in our loft and wondered if anyone was able to help please?

It has the orange lettering on the front cover with a grey stripe across the bottom, the reference number is 588171, the record has the plum/orange label which says on side one, '1, 2, 4, Warner Bros/ 7 Arts. 3. Jewel Music' and on side two, '1, 2, 3, 5. Superhype Music, 4, Jewel Music'

It also has corrected matrix numbers on both sides.
They are as follows:
Side One: 588171 (the second 8 is crossed out and another 8 is inscribed above it), followed by A//1 1 2 2 and then either a 3 or a 5 (we can't quite make it out!)
Side Two: 588171 (the second 8 is crossed out and another 8 is inscribed to the left of it), followed by B//1 1 1 3

The rear cover has the following in the bottom right hand corner, 'UPTIGHT AN' OUTASIGHT is the official Atlantic Appreciation Society at 17/19, Stratford Place, London, W.1.' followed by 'Under licence from Atlantic Recording Corp. USA. Manufactured by Polydor Records Ltd. London. Printed and made by MacNeill Press Ltd., London, S.E.1.'

I have been trying to research this all day as it belonged to my Dad who is sadly no longer with us and my Mum has decided she is now ready to sell it (along with a lot of his other LP's) as she no longer has a record player, we have found conflicting reports of details of rare copies, some saying about having Superhype Music on them and some saying about having Warner Bros on them but the only ones I have been able to find have had the same on either side, whereas our copy has Superhype on one side and Warner Bros on the other!

I'm really sorry for the long waffling post, but I would just like to make sure that if it IS worth something, she actually gets something for it rather than being ripped off somewhere!

Thank you all for your time,
Barders x

It's the colour of the lettering on the cover that defines its rarity. The withdrawn copy had blue lettering. After that it had orange lettering. Nonetheless, yours looks like a first pressing with those matrix numbers. I'd check out popsike to see how much it goes for.

Hi,

Thank you for the replies, so far I have been able to find out that the one's with the orange lettering and the grey stripe across the bottom are early releases, the corrected matrix numbers seem to reaffirm this, what I would like to know is, are these early orange lettered releases rare at all?

The thing that is puzzling me from having looked through completed and current listings on ebay is the Superhype/Warner Bros debate?! Some of the ones I've seen on ebay have had Warner Bros on both sides of the record label and some have had Superhype on both sides, however Dad's copy has Warner Bros on one side and Superhype on the other and I cannot find any information anywhere relating to this, I don't want to list it for sale without first getting my facts straight!

The one's with orange labels that have gone for what I would consider to be 'decent money', all seem to conflict each other in respects to what is 'rare'!

Unfortunately I know very very little about vinyl so I am relying entirely on what I can find online to feed me any information I can find about some of Dad's collection!

A loft is just about the worst place to store LP's unless the roof directly under the tiles/slates has been well insulated. An LP may look perfect but you need to check them carefully for warping.

Hi Graham,

Thank you, they have now all been moved out of the loft and my uncle is kindly going to check them all for us before we go any further.

Thank you

My advice is it will be worth a bit providing it is in good playing condition. This needs to be play graded by someone with a decent modern TT. Records played heavily on old autochangers and passed round at parties are generaly worth little. Frankly this is a common record but not so common in top condition. Prices for good copies are daft in my view in light of this. If this is a top quality copy in genuine EX+ condition I would say 50 to 80 quid. The Tourquise print covers are fetching over £500 but you cannot play a cover. I have to say that being in lofts for years does not do vinyl any good.
