You should not be made to feel bad, too many retailers think customers should dance to their song. If he gives you any trouble say that you will do a full customer review of his services on the biggest forum devoted to vinyl. You could also say you will contact Rega to express your disatisfaction, I am sure that they would be displeased with a poor service dealer.

Give me a large wooden spoon and I can be dangerous

Hmmmm....What model of JVC do you have by the way?
I had a Technics SL-DL1 and they are very very good linear tracking direct drives. Not Technics best linear tracker but maybe their 4th or 5th best and they made loads of models. What cartridges do you have on your 2 turntables?

If the chap really told you that in the shop then frankly he was talking through his c**k. Also if he told you that no one makes Direct Drives anymore and they are rubbish he was lying to you, an idiot or both.

Best advice is get your money back, and invest in a new stylus or cartridge for one or both of your turntables. Then depending on which one is the best of your 2 Direct drives contact Richard at Vantage Audio - http://www.vantageaudio.com/ - and get him to do a full service of it. I'll bet you will have a fully working direct drive with new stylus or cartridge for about the same price as you paid for the RP1 and if you get it serviced it will most likely give you many many more years of pitch perfect listening pleasure.

and he said that it was perfect or almost perfect

That's just the point, 'almost perfect' makes a statement that is not perfect. In which case it could be costrued to be sub-standard.

You are entitled to a full refund whether there is a fault or not under the trade acts. It sounds as you need to be an 'awkward customer' if that is what it takes, but you have your rights.

It would also be worth reporting this to Rega themselves. Against what people might say, they will speak to Joe public and I am sure they will be happy to hear of less than satisfactory dealers.

As for DD's being rubbish and no one makes them anymore, well that's just a load of piffle (trying to be nice without mentioning C**ks here!). There are still manufacturers out there making them, but yes they are expensive. Plenty second hand on the market and some at very good prices if you bide your time and look carefully.

Be firm, get your money back, buy a used Technics 1200 mk2, and look at putting a better arm on it at some point. It's direct drive, built like a tank, and as can be seen by the several boutique retailers offering mods for it around the world, it is a much better deck than the "dj turntable" label it has been saddled with for years implies.

In order to get a belt drive with as stable timing you are looking at spending considerably more than you did on the Rega or would on a 1200. It can be done, and they sound great, but they are not at the shallow end of the belt drive pool.

This retailer has made me really angry, am going to be called stooopid for this. I have a Technics SL-1300 MK I, possibly even a lid for it, slight problem with auto return as it just keeps going but there is easy solution if you remember. Speed can be made to be spot on after warming up but it can drift. Major problem is it has 3 feet but am sure something could be made, found bodged up. Also there is no mat, not expensive for a cheap rubber one

Another VE member, has been generous and tusting to me in the past and I shall pass on his generosity. It's all yours for £25 and will even throw in an Ortofon 2m Red in a headshell. Can't guarantee the condition of the 2M Red but a spare stylus is readily available and is a nice little budget cart that sounds surprisingly good. It should allow you to see if you really like vinyl, if you don't all I ask is that you don't make a profit when passing the items on.

PM me if you are interested with your name and address, can't guarantee that I can do it this week. Oh yes! The price includes insured postage.

The JVC i have is the AL F3, Ive never modified it so i think itll still have the standard cartridge in it

What cartridges do you have on your 2 turntables?

the cartridge on the Technics is a P23

also, the test video for my JVC turntable and the Rega one is back up on youtube for comparisons

That drifting speed issue can be cleared up with a little Deoxit sprayed into the potentiometers and worked around for a few minutes. There is even a 3 part video on Youtube detailing how to go about this simple repair.

^^^^^^^^^^^ This is a very generous offer, the OP will be a fool to miss it. With the money back from the RP1, you could buy a brand new Ortofon 2M blue and a bundle of new records!

No need to buy the 2M Blue, the relacement stylus fits the 2M Red, the bodies are the same.

I think the OP should return the TT for a full refund, it is his legal rights. Sadly he is blessed with perfect pitch and I doubt a belt driven TT will give him the pitch stability he requires. I have good tone and cringe at some renditions of songs, sadly shooting poor performers is illegal and have never watched Pop Idol or similar, I couldn't.

A good few belt driven TTs will give the speed accuracy and stability he needs, this one is not running as it should, mass can be as good at ironing out speed variations as any digital control/quartz lock:-as long as it running at the correct speed to start with
