MacbookPro ADC - opinions?

Postby mr.datsun » 01 Mar 2012 11:31

I've long been thinking about getting a 24/96 audio interface and thinking that it would better than using my MacbookPro unibody's analogue in.

I wonder if people have opinions on the MacBook Pro's built-in ADC? I use the built-in analogue in at 24/96. Is it possible that it's as good as buying a £150 USB m-audio Fastrack-Pro, for example?

It,s been my experience that the difference is negligible or non existent. Save your money.

I agree, I use my MacBook Pros line in at 24/96 and have no complaints... Apple is pretty good about using high quality components and designing things to minimize interference, etc...

Just trying to figure out once I record 24/96 in audacity, how I can export a 16/44.1 wav from that, so I can have a 24/96 version and a cd version without having to record twice...

Back to searching for the answer.

import the 24/96 into iTunes and burn them to a CD, then you can re-import the CD into iTunes.

If you can import your 24/96 tracks into iTunes (AIFF?), then you can create copies of the tracks at whatever resolution you want. Go to Preferences, Import Settings, use Wav, custom, and set it to the settings you want (you have to click on "custom"). Highlight all your tracks. Right click and select "Create WAV Version". It will do that, with all the same info and track names. Right click on one of the tracks and "Show in Finder". Then select all the .WAV files and move them out of the iTunes folder (to a CD burn folder?). If you want, go back into iTunes and select the Wav's (they will be the ones with lower bitrates, alternating with the other tracks) and delete them. Since you moved the files, iTunes will not ask to delete the files.
I use this method to make MP3's for my Android.

It's great to hear the MacBook Pro input fares so well in comparison to separate audio interfaces. Has anyone else found the same (or different!) to be true? THANKS.

Hi,
It is always best to use a out board audio interface for recording vinyl or live music. If you are putting the time to record your LP's sometimes over 2 hours to do all the work and you want to have the best SQ you can get.

2Hrs?... :o

Takes me the better part of a whole day to complete a single LP for archiving....

Too true. That's why I don't do it nearly as much as I should.

I just came by to see if my Macbook Pro did indeed have 24/96 capabilities.
Very nice to know that.

I personally do Vinyl to Digital mastering as part business and respect the comments
about how long it can take to do a good transfer. Over time you can get things
pretty efficient.

I use a Firewire interface to keep it cleaner in my case a Mackie U.420d which has dual phono input that goes direct out to the Firewire input at any Frequency and Bit rate I choose up to 24/96.
For fun I want to now do some tests to see what kind of colouration happens with the analogue input.

Cheers~!

I've got a Firewire ADC as well. I use Audacity to record 96/24 on my iMac (it works 24bit unlike on Windows) save the files out as FLAC and use a program from sbooth.org - Max.app - to convert FLAC to ALAC (Apple Lossless Audio Compression). This drops straight into iTunes, and I can play 96/24 through my DAC, and iTunes compresses into m4a for my iPod.
My records are fairly clean, so there's only usually a half-dozen clicks to repair, but it will still take an hour plus for track labelling/splitting etc.

P.S. I'll try and dig out a phono to 3.5 mm jack adaptor...

Use an adapter with wires. Cables plugged into a solid RCA/jack adapter can put too much leverage on the PC board solder joints holding the jack.

Cheers,
