My new plinth arrived...

Postby ColoKurt » 03 Apr 2012 18:14

...I just need to add the holes. I was originally considering just bolting my SP10 Mk2 to my built-in shelf but I decided to go for a more conventional solution. The maple butcher block is 18x24x4 and I may or may not add a veneer.

I don't think you need a veneer for that, but your choice. :)

Cheers,

Thanks for your comment, Alec. Yes, I'll have to see how it looks once I've finished with the router. What I liked about this end-grain butcher block is that the boards are not regularly sized or spaced so I'm hoping that helps to break up any vibration propagating along the length and width of the plinth. I'm an engineer but not a mechanical one, so I'm not really confident of that. But what I do know is that this was the best $200, minimal-work idea I could come up with.

Just a heads up. You will probably need to cut your arm boards in half width wise. Not many, if any, tonearms have a deep enough socket to attach properly. What I do with my slate arm boards is use 3 adjustable spikes to isolate the arm board completely from the plinth. Plus you can adjust for vta more easily this way.

Hope that is clear enough.

Well, I haven't decided on the arm yet, though the 12" Jelco is the clear leader in the club house. My plan actually was to connect the arm directly to the plinth. I figured if I wanted to change arms down the line, I'd cut out a bigger whole for an arm board then. Does that make any sense? I haven't really done this before.
