tone arm movement

Postby dstroyr » 01 Apr 2012 00:02

I have a Phillips GA 312 with a M95ED Shure cartridge. There is quite a bit of movement in the tone arm when playing. The problem causes excessive woofer travel and clipping. I moved the counter weight forward an re-balanced it, but there is no difference. The tone arm is very steady when the platter is removed. Any ideas?

Maybe I'm not seeing what I think I'm seeing, but....

Looks like your attempting to play the record with a perfectly balanced arm. That would cause the arm to bounce around the grove rather than track it. You need to adjust the tracking force to whatever the manufacturer recommends. You can do this with a digital scale. The specs should be in the cartridge database.
Are we there yet? No, never there yet. Keep it rollin', we're paid by the mile.

I'm no expert on the tt you have, but if the tt is steady, then the automatic mechanism is rubbing where it shouldn't be somewhere inside.

I'm not sure what you mean by the tonearm being stable when the platter is off. Do you mean not turning? or taken completely off. As stated above, the tonearm needs to be adjusted to apply downforce at the cartridge to keep the stylus in the groove. Usually something around 2 grams or less.

I think people are having a hard time seeing what is going on. If I'm seeing what destryr is talking about, the tonearm is wobbling in the first 9 seconds of the video. There is nothing touching the tonearm in that portion, besides the internal mechanism of the tt. It almost looks like the platter movement is coupled to your tonearm movement.

The 1st 9 seconds the turntable is running with the platter on. Next it running with the platter off. The tone arm is adjusted to about 1.5grams of weight. There is no rubbing of the platter. The movement of the tone arm coincides with the platter on and running. The woofer travel happens only with the phono. I am curious if anyone else has encountered this problem
