Restoring a Dual 1225

Postby glennefj » 28 Mar 2012 22:01

Hey guys!

I finally got a record player, an almost perfect-looking Dual 1225. I've replaced the power-cable, removed the DIN-cable and replaced with RCA, separated the ground, and put in a AT95E cartridge, and got it cleaned and adjusted.

Still, I seem to have a small slow-down once in a while. It doesn't seems to be on each revolution, but a bit random.
I haven't oiled the motor and the idler-wheel. Could someone please guide me through lubing these?
Do I have to pull the motor apart? How much apart?

Where exactly are the bearings? Are you supposed to be able to disassemble it enough to take out the balls or what?...

Sorry, I'm new to this, and I don't know how much I have to disassemble, I couldn't find a good picture on the forum.

I'm pretty new to the forum too, sounds like you're on the right track to getting your TT fixed up!!! If you check around the forum you should get some good information from other posts on motor problems. You do have to crack the motor open to clean & lube the bearings and the bottom one is a bit of a problem, grunk & crud runs downhill. I haven't done it on any of mine yet. Someone recently asked if they could use birdshot for roller bearings, NO, so maybe the races aren't sealed. I don't know but I will find out eventually!! Maybe someone with more knowledge will give both of us a few more tips on this. Glenn.

Hi Glenn,

You can get a full lecture through numerous threads over Dual motors lubrication by using the search box on the right hand top of this page, even I think specifically for your own model.
I personnally dismantled three 1019 motors without problem: just mark them before taking apart so you can put them together again properly: I forgot to do it at the first attempt and it ended turning the wrong way!
Suppose you downloaded the service manual for the 1225.
Keep us informed about your progress,
Good luck and have fun,

Cheers,

Hugh.

I think everything is sorted out now. It just needed to be played a bit I guess. It's been fitted with a AT 95E btw, and it plays VERY nice!

I'm having a new problem though, I replaced the "steuerpimpel" with a coax cable inner insulation - worked perfectly! But now sometimes it just suddenly moves the arm over the whole album before putting down the needle (on the label...) and then just retracts and stops.

To be more specific:

Push Play -> Arm lifts up, goes perfectly over to the lead-in groove -> waits a second, then suddenly moves all the way to the center -> needle down (on label) -> arm lifts up again, retracts to the arm holder, lowers and shuts off.

This happens less than 1 out of 5 times. Could it be that my new "steuerpimpel" is worn down uneven, or maybe it's too long? It did work perfectly for 4 weeks (used every day).

I'm thinking that the new "steuerpimpel" was a bit soft to begin with, but has now hardened after some use. But in this process, some dust from the coax insulation ("steuerpimpel") has covered the friction area, which I think maybe could create problems?
I opened the Dual and cleaned this area. I could see that the steuerpimpel (which can spin freely) had a uneven wear, but seemed harder now as it's been used (which is good).
Atm. I haven't gotten the problem after I cleaned the friction area. It could be that the steuerpimple is a tad to high. If it continues, I'll try to sand it down 0.5mm (or less) and see if this sorts out the problem, and report back to you with the current length of the "steuerpimpel".

Hi Glenn,

This all really sounds like a steuerpimpel problem.
The friction area should be exempt from oil or grease: clean it with isopropyl.
You can proceed as you already started; or else, mrow2, very active on this forum actually makes new ones by the original standards and you can get them through e-bay, quite cheaply.
Do get in touch with him on his private box, he might be able to help you.
By the way, your restoration looks very nice!
Good luck,

cheers,

Hugh.

Your "pimpel" may be a hair too long. Try shaving a TINY bit off with a razor blade. If you cut it too short, you can always make another one.
