What if you won the Lottery?

Postby bauzace50 » 29 Mar 2012 14:27

Hi,
tomorrow, Friday March 30, the Mega Millions Lottery in USA will draw for a record Jackpot of US$500 Million. That is Half of One Billion dollars.

What would you do with audio if you won that Jackpot?

I would design a media room, and install the equipment I already have (audio/video)
New equipment? Possibly:

Townshend turntable with tonearm damping (or, TT with peripheral ring)
New SME 309 tonearm, to replace my 10-year-old SME 309.
New Blue Angel Mantis (plus another Denon DL-103R with modifications, and one DL-S1)
KEF Blade speakers? Maybe.
Amplification with the necessary higher power (probably McIntosh?)
Would consider surround system for the video, not necessarily, since 2 front speakers already work well for me.

That's it.
My present audio/video system fills my preferences, and a dedicated media room is the most pertinent step up. Of course, the room will be larger, and would necessitate higher amplifier power.

If grandma have had balls - would be a grandpa....

Lottery is played by folks, who are bad with a math.
To dream while you asleep it's ok. To dream while you awake - needs attention of medicine professional.

When(if) money bag drops in front of you - you won't be buying a turntable, but will be looking an orchestra play for you...

Good nite and sweet dreams....

I'd definitely have a 'Basis ART' simply because it's insanely designed, insanely expensive and hence would suit my life-style down to a T. I was thinking of a Clear-Audio Goldfinger, but don't know if I could put up with a cartridge which would probably look better as a brooch. Any old stupidly priced Koetsu would do just fine.

Some huge Chord mono-blocks and a Chord Pre-amp to go with some undecided huge speakers and some ridiculously expensive interconnects and speaker cables. Not because they'd make any difference, but because 'you can'. And they had better have directional arrows on them otherwise I'd be gutted.

I'm afraid not here, I'd just buy myself Rammstein and be happy

Oh and a shed load of records

The Mega Millions drawing took place a few minutes before this post. I know nobody who has the numbers drawn. The news on TV said if nobody had the six numbers, the jackpot would rise to $975 million. Just short of one billion dollars. If so, I can imagine the "betting frenzy" that would occur.

Not necessarily. I know most people probably don't know the odds but they do know that they are astronomical. Then again, I don't know the investment/return ratio for this lottery, but in Australia the powerball draws which get the big prizes offer you a prize, sometimes above $20m, for a 50c bet. I think the vast majority of people playing these lotteries are aware that to get such a high payout from such a low bet then the odds are going to be ridiculous.

I find these less offensive than poker machines. Now they suck people's money in a hurry.

I rarely buy a ticket in these things but occasionally I do, just for fun. It's nice to dream.

If I won this sort of money I think I'd get a Micro Seiki AP M1, SZ 1 and SX 8000. Maybe add a Continuum Caliburn for something new as well. Would be no problem housing these in the huge man cave I'd have. Would most likely just keep the Blue Angel and add a few more carts for variety.

DS
My System: Micro Seiki BL51 Turntable, Stax UA7 Tonearm, RCM Sensor Prelude Phono Stage, Ortofon MC15 Super II Cartridge, Rotel RCD865BX Cd Player, Melody I34R (Astro Black 40) amp and Osborn Epitome Speakers.

Very little, I fear.

But I can promise you that you wouldn't hear from me for a month or so...well, maybe a couple of weeks anyway.

....I might spend an awful long time listening to some other stuff though :!:

I have not played the lottery for years. Through hard work I now dont have a 9-5 job (farm is a bit of a hobby can be longer than 9-5 or days off but it is my choice). I dont have a morgage or any depts and have an income from investements that I worked very hard for. I dont have millions but I am secure, I dont really want anymore and if I was gifted millions I dont think I would change much in my life. My feeling is live your life for today, the grass is not greener on the other side of the fence. I am no more contented now than I was as a poor student cashing checks in the pub when my overdraft was called in, infact I have fond memories of those days apart hiding from the bank... Money helps a lot and is no fun if you have none in this world, but it really is not the key to happyness that is all up to you whatever your financial position. Money stresses are horrible my first company almost folded so I know very well, and it was an awful time, but some should really spend more time on living their actual life than a fantasy that if they had would be very different anyway and probably far more boring.
Rant over :)
