Looks great!

I added a second heater in mine and we kept it toasty inside at -45 outside.

We had to scrape the frost off the INSIDE of the windows (that's why you don't return the hotel key cards!)

Thanks for the parts tip Jim I will give them a call next time I need something which may be soon when I look into what is wrong with the brakes :) .
Yes I was aware of the wading plug and it is the one thing Toyotas do seem to have in their favour in not needing them. The problem with installing wading plugs here is imagine a typical wet season day were you spend the day back and forth across creeks with slashing rain and mud. Crawling underneath to fit a wading plug in the mud and monsoon rain does not fill you with joy, maybe if I put my thinking cap on I can work out a closing valve idea that can be done from in the cab. I will look into the starter and alternator very soon, I have fixed up my starter recently, but dont want the trouble again in the future. The alternator apart its aversion to water is just not big enough especially if you do a lot of stopping and starting so again I really appreciate the tip. :D
Ok guys which was the best Landy ever?
I missed out on a very nice series 2a with a turbo charged diesel Perkins in it, IMO this was the best of both worlds.
Also I recently in a dealers in Cairns sat in the new model and IMO the spirite has been lost a bit with far too many electronics. I cant imagine going 1000km into the bush and the computer decides you are not going home. Have they moved the seat even closer to the drivers door?

New doors are improved (stamped frame rather than welded pieces) so they leak less (not stopped mind you!) so the new 'plush' door panels make it seem more cramped than it is!

When you go 1-wire with the alternator, you can get 100 amps or more if you want...

How do you go 1 wire with an alternator?

GM alternators have the voltage regulator and rectifier on-board. 1 wire from it conects to the (+) side of the battery and the body is grounded to the engine block.

I believe Landrover's sound quite good when they are running well. :D

After a couple of requests the off topic posts from the cd player thread were merged with the new thread. The older posts show first, there isn't a way around this.

There is no derail in off topic :) We can talk mud chuggers here and your input was amazing. Most of my 4x4ing has been on my propery which is big. I have also done some serious stuff in Queensland, but would love to have done the trips you have done with a 4x4 especially north.
We still have not decided on the best Landy yet, which was the best model?? :D

110 300Tdi 3-door with the military (or even better) commercial reinforced frame.

It has all the correct boxes checked for an expedition truck, and why I chose that model over all others (commercial in my case- ex UK power company truck).

A close second might be a Disco I with the 300Tdi, but it lacks in cargo capacity. However, the slightly shorter wheelbase makes it advantageous in tight areas. Like I said, a close second.

130 is too long and heavy, 90 has too little cargo capacity. 101 seems just right on all counts (except the V8) but since it is a factory 'kit-bash' it is a nightmare to work on, and you have to work on them constantly. A small Unimog is not a bad choice but top speed is an issue with longer trips, as is the weight and height in many third-world countries.

Other engines are not the best choice, as the 300Tdi is the last of the mechanical diesels from Land-Rover. It can me rigged to run on almost nothing, and even without an electrical system (in event of fire for instance) can be made to run reliably, easily. I do not suggest trying to get a Range Rover V8 to operate without an electrical system... (although the early ones can be quite good, though low on cargo space)

When you prep for expedition, you quickly realize what will and wont work. Then after doing a few you refine that further. I truly feel the 300Tdi 110 is the way to go, and why that is what I now have.

I dont think there is a best one , there are vehicles better at certian tasks than others, the discovery was better at getting stuck than the defender for instance. The Freelander is better for getting the kids to school and having an interior that could physically make you ill, then you simply whipe it off the green vinyl with a warm soapy rag.
Series vehicles are good at making your ears bleed and if you can bare to have the roof off and windscreen folded down you can then have the pleasure of picking flies out of your teeth for the remainder of the day.
Defenders are really good at all of the above, with the added luxury of having crap engines and the ability to rust away before your very eyes.

I quite like the look of this in the Dunsfold collection.

Although this looks like good fun.
