If I had a penny for every copy of Whipped Cream I saw in the Thrift store boxes...what was it with So Cal kids in the sixties and Herb? Was he this popular across the States or just here?

Herb Alpert, James Last, Mitch Miller, Nana Mouskouri, - the list goes on, and on, and on!

Cheers,
Alec

Herb the Alpert was popular in Britain and Germany. I have some (inc Cream) bought new in the 60's in Germany - mint. Good to play once a decade, or checking tracking with.

I could say the same though about Elvis and Neil Sedaka at thrift stores in Wales, knee deep. Recently given some albums and Neil Sedaka is in there about 8 times.

"OH CAROL!!!! where is that guy that makes vynil bowls?"

Now that Englebert is reping for UK at Eurovision, maybe time to sell those (they were my mother's - honest!). Any offers? - didn't think so.

Regards
Pete

When I was in college in the mid 90s, my roommate was picking up every copy of Whipped Cream and other Delights he found cheaply, in the hopes of decorating a wall of the house with the covers. He said the most that he paid for any copy was 99 cents. I moved out before he was able to put them up, but at that time he had approximately 4 dozen, and he'd been working on his collection for 8 months. I don't think it has made any sort of a dent in the Herb Alpert vinyl surplus.
I know it's only rock & roll, but I like it.

Herb Alpert was popular all over the US.

I actually picked up a copy of HA&tTB GH today. First copy of any of their albums I've seen for sale. Now I did come across loads of Englebert, Johnny Mathis, & Jim Nabors LPs. Not to mention Roger Whittaker.

My mother loved the guy.

I look at it this way, thanks to all those crappy Herb Alpert LP's, we now have A&M records!

And Herb Alpert's music then was loved by adults and teenagers alike and all points in between. Whipped Cream & Other Delights and Going Places are still superb records even now.

I've got a fondness for Herb Alpert as well. I just always see a ton of the stuff. The Lonely Bull is my personal favorite. There is a great Yuletide collection from the golden age of A&M called Something Festive that I also come across at thrift stores with regularity.

It also features Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66, Burt Bacharach and Claudine Longet. Pretty swingin' stuff!

THE biggest collection, from someone who actually likes records is the one by Paul Mawhinney (3M and counting)

I'll have to catch that episode. Herb Alpert was pretty popular here on the east coast as well. Was a band that parents and kids enjoyed. Although there are tons in the bins, which has worked out well for me, since I was able to get better copies than my old originals. Whipped Cream was scandalous when it first came out.
There used to be this tv show where folks went into a supermarket to fill their carts in a short period of time. Imagine if you had 10 minutes to rifle through that collection! :) That could be a show I would watch. People gathering what they can in 10 mins and then interviewing them afterwards. Sort of like the New Vinyl thread on steroids.

I know the host, Ben Friedman. He fronted The Cigar Store Indians, a band that began as a rock-a-billy outfit here in Georgia. The song after the theme and the outro music is him.
