Cartridge for Jelco 750-D

Postby houdinifangs » 24 Mar 2012 03:42

Anyone got some good suggestions for a new cart for a Jelco 750-D arm - under $400 (US)?

Thanks.

If you have an MC preamp, a Denon DL-301 II is terrific.

Cheers,

I was thinking about the DL - 103R, the price difference is no concern, would the DL-301 II be a better march with the Jelco?

Thanks

Hi,

it's a choice between two different philosophies:

- Heavy tonearm, DL-103(R), SUT, valve based phono stage, triodes, high efficient loudspeakers

versus

- Light tonearm, DL-301-II, MC phono stage, modern day high end amplification and loudspeakers

What would be your choice?

Ahhh I'm in the middle and not really in the know.

I'm a valve amp and high efficiency speaker kinda guy but had planned on a MC phono stage.

Is the Jelco considered heavy or light?

It's in between of a real middleweight and a heavyweight. Tending towards heavy.

Apart from the silicon, there is nothing against a MC phono stage with a DL-103(R).
Try cartridge loading between 500Ohm and 1KOhm.

These are the cartridge's I have used on my Jelco 750-d so far -
Pickering xv15 - 625 - works very well in original headshell
Shure ultra 500 - used a 10gram headshell worked nicely but not quiet as well as the Pickering
Decca Gold - Have owned this cartridge for 30 years and this was the best it has ever sounded , finally tamed with the damping screw turned fully in -GREAT !
Ortofon Black 2m - still bedding this in but all seems good , this is a fantastic cartridge and I was worried about it being a match for the Jelco but several forum guy's said it would be ok and it is !
My hi fi has come and gone but the Leak stereo 20 stays !!

Decca super gold is a blinding cart that works well with my Jelco (12" version).
Looks like it came our of a Christmas cracker, but dont be fooled.

Denon 103R is a very good match with the 750D and many users have reported that. Gets even better with a rebody of the cartridge and the optional heavier counterweight for the Jelco which will be necessary with the heavier bodies.

All pretty much do-able around the $400 budget.

I concur on this I owned a 750D and 103R and they sounded great together. As stated a re-body helps. I added a headshell weight to my 750D. the combination of a re-body and the weight took the arm/cart.combo to a new level. The nice thing about this setup is you can do the mods in baby steps and hear the differences each mod makes.... 8)

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate all comments. I think I'll settle for the 103R now but I'd like to check out the Decca in the future.
