More noise issues... need to get this figured out...

Postby Zaimejs » 18 Mar 2012 21:25

I would say 80% of the time, my turntable (Garrard 95B) sounds fine on my Onkyo 701 through the standard phono preamp. But now and then, I get weird feedback. It's not very much, but it's enough to bug me.

Today, I tried to isolate the issue. I unplugged the turntable from the wall, and I still heard the feedback. I have the phono cables extended to reach the preamp using shielded av cables. I unplugged the phono cables from the extensions and still heard feedback. My amp was only silent after I unplugged the cables entirely. So I have to believe that the cables themselves are causing this feedback. I isolated them away from all the other cables that could possibly be causing any trouble and pulled them out around the other side. I plugged them in, and I get feedback.

So I guess my question is... is it the cables... is it my Onkyo? What could be causing this annoying hiss/buzz noise?

I'm going to try some more things... I just want to get this figured out. It sounds so good when there is no noise... but the noise just makes life miserable for everyone.

That's what it sounds like! Ugly universe. Not nearly as pretty as Pink Floyd :)

Hi Zaimejs,

Did you try to connect the SL95 with a "reel vintage" receiver, a Marantz, pioneer or something else from the 70's?
I had the same issue with my Zero 100, now he plays with my Luxman CL350/M150 and all the hums and bugs are gone....
I tried also the new speaker-cables, sold them quick... blows the fuse of my M-150.
Just a tought...

Regards,
Ernst

When you say you unplugged your extensions, do you mean you have phono cable extensions on your regular phono cable from the turntable. If so, you are really compromising your system. Your phono cable should be no more than 3 feet long, or one meter. The signal from your cartridge is miniscule, and losses in the cable become an issue. A longer cable requires more gain from your preamp, and more area for outside noise to enter your system. If you can, try to use no more than 3 feet from cartridge to preamp.

I'm guessing this is the issue then. I have about 9 feet of cable. I have my record player on this lovely wooden end table. It doesn't fit on my modern entertainment center. My option is to move my tuner to the wooden end table and run all the cables to that so I don't compromise my turntable. So many cables would have to be rerouted. :(

Summer is almost here.
