upgrading a planar 2 ... suggestions ?

Postby gibsonfndr » 14 Nov 2006 17:45

Hello. Long time no see.
I am thinking of changing my old rega planar 2 for something substantially better. It is actually fitted with an origin live upgraded rb250 and a denon dl103 cartridge. as I don't have a big budget here are some of the contenders ... the origin live aurora, the pro-ject rpm 9 (or 10) and the rega P5 ... all in the £1000/ €1500 range.
Anyone's got a suggestion ?
which one is "the best" ?
I know it's hard to talk about "the best" but maybe some of them have well known flaws ?
thanks for your help.
ps : I play my LPs through the naim nac72/nap140/hicap trinity ...

Well you have a great arm in the modded 250 so I'd keep that, as for the the three mentioned, they've all had very good reviews, is there a chance of auditioning them with your 250? If you can, then the money saved by not taking the stock arm could be put in upgrading the cart as well. Trust your ears

well I'd love beeing able to just sit and listen but ... for example one can't find origin live turntables in France ... and I'm not sure there's a shop in my hometown that would have both the pro-jetc and the p5 not even allowing me to try my 250 on their turntables ... see the problem ?

That would be a problem...
I've owned three Regas, great tables as your already aware, I've listened to one Project, cant remember the model but I liked the Regas more.
The Origin Live is the one I would be really interested in as I admire the company and think they make some of the best equipment around. As you've owned a Rega and already have a modded OL arm I'd be looking seriously at the OL just for the change it will give you.
Good Luck and keep us posted!

thank you guys. As a matter of fact, I more or less had in mind that my origin modified arm could be as good if not better thann the pro-ject one so as long as people can confirm that the origin turntable is a good one then I might go for it ... let's see what father Xmas will say !

I'd be tempted by the Funk V. It comes armless but ready for an RB250, it has a DC motor and a great bearing. Most of the reviews are pretty positive too. Hopefully I'll get the chance to hear one at the Bristol show next February.
