2 votes for Rickie Lee Jones.
Her self titled debut in 1980 and her 2nd LP , Pirates, in 1981 , are sonically stunning.
So well recorded, and musically excellent.
Sonically, of the two, I think Pirates takes it though.
You'll hear Angel Trumpets and Devil Trombones...you are invited.

Agreed.

R.E.M. - Murmur sounds amazing. The sparse production really lets the instruments shine through. A very organic sounding record.

I'd love finding any Talk Talk on vinyl, but it's hard to find, especially any original pressings.

I'm gonna say Rush's Moving Pictures.
It just sounds amazing, especially Neil Peart's drum tracks.

Psychedelic Furs - Midnight To Midnight

I didn't care for it when I first heard it due to what I thought was a watered down and over-processed 80's sound.... then I got it on LP and the quality of the pressing won me over. Bless Columbia Records and DMM!! "Mirror Moves" sounds awesome too.

XTC - The Big Express
Skylarking and English Settlement (which I just picked up a mint British pressing of) were already mentioned. Dukes of Stratosphere sound incredible on LP as well.

Oingo Boingo - Only A Lad
Need I say more? Sounds absolutely stunning on vinyl. If you dig them... get this! You won't be disappointed.

Til Tuesday - Voices Carry

Stray Cats - Built For Speed

A couple other bands I enjoy on LP from that era are "Snake Corps" and "Sad Lovers & Giants".

Agree with Pixies, Kate Bush, and The Cure (Disintegration sounds huge). Does Misfits - "Collection I" count? I love me some Misfits on vinyl! I also met the singer from A Flock of Seagulls, but in the mid 90's. His ego must have shrunk a bit as he was very kind and soft spoken. Their debut album is awesome from start to finish. :D

I agree, dire straits LP are all nicely recorded. i have a couple of half speed masters too and they just blow you away.

Tracey Chapman self titled, is another wonderfully recorded LP, together with Sade's diamond life.

I actually think ou can put all of thomas dolby's albums in there. they are all very well recorded. He was quite a stickler for having things sound right.

Just about anything by the Cure has a magical edge to it. Have all the early stuff (Some could be classed as modern music for funerals) and the 12" of Love Cats has to be one the finest recordings ever made.

Makes me want to swim home and play as none on the I-Pod. :(
