I'm the owner of MICROSEIKI BL 51 for 15 years; since one year there's a strange whistle in the motor which is getting louder.
Does anybody know what that can be and what I can do about it?

Hi Robert

Welcome to VE.

I have a BL-51 and so does another forum member davidsss in Australia.

I think it could be time to remove the headsheoll and cartridge to prevent damage while you work. Then, remove the belt and finally the platter to inspect and re-lubricate the motor which I hope can be saved. I'm not sure at this time if the noise is coming from the motor or spindle bearing.

To remove the platter, lift it up on the platter's edge and strike the spindle with a very small (150g) plastic-covered mallet (only one or twice) and the platter should come off.

Once you have done so, post again for more advice.

If the belt is removed and the motor switched on, you will hear if it is the motor or the spindle bearing which has a problem.

Hi Ba, thanks for your reply
When I took the belt off, the motor spindle makes a rumbling sound. When I put the belt back on the rumbling sound is gone. But then this high pitch sound is there again.
The motor spindle has some vertical play in it: is this normal?
Thanks, Rob

Hi

Yes, there's about 3mm vertical play which I guess is normal.

But did you oil the motor?

Alec

Hi, I thought that the motor is a closed unit, so is it possible to oil the motor? And how can I do this?Rob

I usually put a drop of oil on the end of a small screwdriver, then touch it to the motor shaft under the pulley. Do this a couple of times. About #20 machine oil should do.
Some motors have the bottom end of the shaft visible. If this one does, add a drop or 2 there, too.
Blue Angel knows more than I do.

I have the same problem with my BL-51 :(

If you find a fix let me know. I'm probably going to send it to someone experienced for repair, I'm all thumbs when it comes to this type of work.

Hay, I oiled the motorshaft with motoroil; it is strange: with 45 RPM, this high pitch sound is almost gone. but with 33 RPM it is still there. What else is left to do? Thanks, Rob

Hello Rob,

Problem is you must also oil the the bottem bearing and thats not easy !
You can also replace the motor for a Origin one !

Really? More details on this, please. My motor has a bit of noise even after servicing, would be awesome to have a replacement. Really love this deck, but the motor seems a bit wonky.

This problem is really weird as turntable motors usually respond + to a lubrication. Perhaps you should try again, top and bottom - using a piece of wire or a metal skewer and let the oil run down near the pulley shaft. It may help to see if you can raise and lower the pulley shaft during lubrication as the up and down movement may 'suck' some oil into where it's needed.
