HELP! technics sl-1950..bent tonearm?

Postby allarevessels » 12 Feb 2012 18:44

Uggh. I just spent a few hours setting up an old Technics SL-1950. So its on a stand, to the left of a fireplace mantle, playing a record, cover off. Up on the mantle sits a stack of records between a speaker here- X IIIII(<--stack of records) and the receiver here X...I slide the receiver to the right, the record stack tips to the left, knocks the speaker off the mantle and onto the tonearm and the spinning platter. Follow me? I'm a dummy or today is not my day.
So the records gouged, the stylus is wrecked and the tone arm is tipping up. the tone arm will only fall down if i take the weight off.
Have I totally destroyed this piece of equipment? Could the problem be something other than a bent tonearm, as the arm doesn't look much different to me.
If the tonearm needs replacing, what Technics model tonearm would be compatible. Thanks!

Was the counterweight knocked to the rear of the arm stub? Will it balance if you wind it closer to the pivot?

Cheers,
Alec
Keep them spinning.

Possible to post some pictures of it? Get as close in to the entire tonearm as possible.
