Can PVC record sleeves damage vinyl?

Hey guys,..I had a bit of a freak out earlier today after reading the Times supplement "Let's Twist again: Your must-read guide to the vinyl revival".

The record collector Bob Stanley talked about the risk of ruining ones' valuable Record Collection my using Petrol Based PVC sleeves. It turns out it can cause "irreparable damage" as the oil in the vinyl and sleeve can fuse causing a "misting" on records along with an audible hiss. He goes on to say that this was the case with the BBC's Gramaphone Library which was partially ruined!!!!



Has anyone else heard this before???

All my albums are in heavy clear PVC sleeves and I'm seriously concerned!!!

Well I have my records in a paper/anti-static inner sleeve, then the main outer sleeve (record jacket) and then the PVC sleeve, so I'm not sure how the two surfaces (PVC sleeve/LP) can come into contact to cause any damage.... I have been using these PVC sleeves for years and never had any issues with them. I guess if you put a bare LP into one and left it for a year or three it may cause some issues.

Or are you talking about the actual inner sleeve itself?

That's what I thought initially Lees, however, I think he still claims using an outer PVC sleeve can affect the record.

Could I be reading it wrong? Is he in fact talking about direct contact to PVC?

He talks about using Polypropylene as a better option....

I've seen some plastic sleeves 'stick' to the vinyl. I just peel them off, clean the record and it sounds perfect.

The article is a bit of nonsense. By the way, records are made of... PVC.

Haven't had any real problem with plastic sleeves so far, while paper sleeves always leave all kind of residues on the record and decompose over time.

...As Lees says above,..what is NOT clear is if he is actual referring to "Outer" sleeves or "Inner" sleeves affecting the Vinyl.

I personally Nagaoka use Anti-Static Record Sleeves on tall my vinyl, then I put the Covered Record in a Heavy PVC outer sleeve to protect the cover. I think this journalist is claiming that even this, with no direct contact, still can damage to your valuable records?????

To be fair to the writer, record sleeves are often sold with a basis weight, much the same way as paper. I've no idea how many sleeves it's based on though

A lot of mine are in heavy outer PVC covers but I don't see/hear any issues yet. Any idea how long it's supposed to take? 20, 30, 40 years?

For some reason not a single Smiths record I own is in a PVC cover except for a couple of 7"s. Everything else has been au naturel for the last 25 years. It doesn't seem to have done the covers too much harm though - not that I'd ever sell them
