The Alisson One project

Postby pbalcaen » 12 Jan 2012 01:21

I was fortunate to purchase a nice set of Alisson One's from my sons employer. Cabinets and grills we perfect. I have heard about them but I never got to see them until we went to his garage, His wife made him put them into storage about 15 years ago. So i handed over the $100 CAN and away the project went. See all of the pictures for details. I am so pleased with these speakers that are over 35 years old. I have always had AR's but these are awsome.

Thanks for sharing your "project".

I remember going to hear Allison-1 speakers back when they were first on the market. The shop was in Rochester NY but can't recall the name. Roy Allison took an interesting approach to getting flat in-room bass energy. They were sorta the last the last gasp of "East Coast Sound".

For $100 you got a deal - even with the work you had to do.

What are you driving them with?

There are mornings when I feel that way about myself.

That McIntosh should be a great amp for those. Enjoy!

How did you remove the disintergrated foam? Also how did you centralize the coils before gluing the new surrounds down? I am asking as it is always a job I have avoided, but I am curious there must be an easy way to do it. Congrats and well done!! =D> I am not familiar with the model, but I bet they sound a lot better than 100 dollar speakers :D . Is that a done midrange?

Here is how you do it step by step.
It is easy, if the spiders are still ataches as they hold the voice coils in place. You glue the inner ring and then glue the otter ring and move it up and down so it self centres before the outer glue dries. Here is the step by step process. Yes it is a dome midrange, The mids and highs of these speakers of very smooth not harsh at all. The sound great at low volumes as well. But is you put the power to them they are very impressive. A very wide soundstage.

Cafe Latte - You may be interested to read about the Roy Allison design.

The midrange and tweeter where unique to Roy Allison's concept. Not the usual "domes".

If you are dubious about your ability to center the cone, you can - after the surround has been removed and everything is cleaned up - carefully remove the dustcap, and use paper or thin card (business card) shims between the pole piece and coil, to ensure near-perfect centering.

Cheers,
Alec

Wow, I really had the beer googles on with the spelling. Remember folks, don't drink and type.

Alec, I was thinking of pulling the dust caps and shimming but the dope from the factory was too sticky. I would have wrecked the cones. I was able to get full movement without any rubbing on the voice coils by using the process described. As I say, as long as the spiders are good you can do it this way if your careful.
