My RP3 has arrived but with faults.

Postby RP3user » 30 Dec 2011 07:37

Hi everyone

My RP3 arrived on the 23rd. The first thing I noticed on unpacking it was the motor housing cover; it has been poorly fitted and as a result has become distorted when the wood screws have been tightened. I was not overly happy with this but thought I could live with this as it doesn't show.

The next are more serious but I am unsure what the fault(s) are so I will describe them as best I can:

Most of the time I am very happy with the sound but when you get to the end of a record and lift the arm off you get the normal thump sound as the stylus parts with the vinyl and put the arm on the rest. However, there is still a slight crackle coming from the speakers, as if the stylus was still running on the record. This goes on for a minute, sometimes more, sometimes less then you get the "lift off" thump again and all is quiet.

The last problem is when I am listening to a record, all is great then suddenly I get the "lift off" thump, the volume drops and what sound there is, is distorted. Raising and lowering the arm again brings things back to normal.

Clearly I am not happy with this but can anyone tell me just what the problems are from my poor descriptions?

Thanks

Graham

Hi, the first "after thump when already lifted cart" is pretty normal for Rega carts, witnessed that with all my Rega carts more or less ;-).
It will also get less when time goes by using the cart.
I presume you have the Elys2(blue with 3 mounting screws?) mounted on it from the factory?

Second part sounds like mistracking to me:
- too much side-bias?
- too low VTF(force on the needle should be around 1.75 gr)
- bad quality cartridge maybe > have read a lot more (also on other forums)
complaints about not too well tracking Elys2's

Goodluck!

For the second one, check your wiring.
If problems with the wiring being a new table return it.

Thanks for the replies guys. I have checked the arm set-up and everything is correct. I have also looked at the wiring and there is nothing obviously wrong so I gave the dealer a ring. He is going to speak with Rega next week to see if they have an answer and possibly arrange for a replacement TT.

OK, Rega reckon it's a fault with the Elys2 cartridge. The dealer is going to fit a replacement for me on Saturday.

The new cartridge was fitted on Saturday and it's working well now. All in all I am very pleased with the RP3 but in my view you do need the TT PSU to get the best out of it.The two combined provide very respectable performance and sound in that form.

That's great to hear!
The TTPS seems to boost up the Rega sound or as you Brits call it PRAT.
It's still a great sounding table in its stock form.

Agreed, trouble is once you get used to using it with the TT PSU you get spoilt. When I took the TT back to the dealer to fit the cartridge he hooked it up to his reference system using the standard transformer and I was a little concerned regarding the sound quality. It wasn't until I got home and put it back in my system that I was entirely happy that the new cartridge was OK.

LOL! Exactly the same issue here!
The crackle'n'pop stops after a few seconds, or has done the first few times at least.

Don't know if this will go away with time or if I should contact the dealer again?

All Rega MM carts do this, so no need to worry.
I have 2 Exact. 1 Elys and a Bias the past years. They crackle a little a few seconds after you lift the needle.

Hi RoDa.

Rega reckoned it was a fault and just changed mine for me. The Elys2 didn't last long after that (a few weeks at most) before I fitted an SAE which is a much better cartridge.

Hmm.... Didn't hear this on the first two RP3s. They had a little thump when lifted from the LP, but no crackle and another thump on those.

Hi Gra, thanks.

I made a soundclip of it and sent to the dealer and the distributor.
They have been very helpful so I guess they will replace it if it's a faulty Elys.

I like the sound from this little blue Elys, so I'll stick to that for a while.

Just checked again my Exact on a P7.
After playing a record and lifting the arm i hear static crackle for a few seconds. After another few seconds a thump and then quiet. The Exact and Elys 2 i had on my ex RP3 also did this, so i have personaly not worried to much about it. They all sound fine when in use.
