Changing the platter on an RPM5

Postby TheAppleChap » 20 Mar 2011 02:55

Looking at the accessories available for Pro-ject turntables I see an acrylic platter that is used on many of the cheeper Pro-ject models called the "Pro-ject ACRYLIC IT".

Would this fit on an RPM5 and if so would it allow the record puck to be used and more importantly would it likely improve or degrade the sound.

It's about £80 here in the UK which seems like a good value upgrade if it works compared to , say, an enhanced cartridge or stylus.

Just a thought as i would enhance the look of the RPM5 too!

All thoughts much appreciated as usual.

Alan,
I went through this and it won't work.
According to Henley, it's thinner rendering the clamp pointless.
However, should you not use the clamp anyways, it could be considered an upgrade.

If you decide to go for it, I would be interested to hear if you notice an improvement.

BTW, decided not to invest in the Ikon Audio. Tempted as I am, I decided that a new phono stage (Dino +) would be my first step followed by a DAC for the digital front-end.
Cheers,

Henk

are you saying the acrylic platter available for the debut or RM 1.3 is thinner than the stock one? Why would that render the puck useless? couldnt you get a different puck?
