My PL-570

Postby jjohnstone » 03 Dec 2011 02:30

I re-veneered this table with walnut veneer. Stained with a Cherry/Early American stain, then 10 coats of polyurethane!! Hand rubbed, Feels like glass! I love it. Sanded, polished, and buffed the dustcover.Running a Shure RXP3 through a Pioneer SX-750 with vintage Akai speakers. I like to look at it almost as much as listening to it:

Looks gorgeous. That big Yamaha receiver goes well with it.

Cheers,

Thanks for the compliment! It works perfectly, too. Thirty-five years old!!
The PL-570 weighs 30 lbs. Extremely heavy.
The Receiver is actually a Pioneer SX-750. It has also been re-veneered. Both of these components originally had a wood look vinyl film finish in two layers. The outer layer was very prone to peeling. I peeled off both layers and used walnut veneer. My first veneering job. It took two tries to get the turntable right. The first try was with a thin veneer that was too hard to work with. The second try was with 1/16", and I used wood glue instead of contact cement. It takes patience!

Very nice.
I have a PL-550, acquired at a yard sale, that is looking pretty ratty. If it seems to be a good turntable, I may copy your efforts.

Cheers,
Alec

Beautiful job. I've got a PL-115D that looks a little ratty. I plan on getting the base freshened up one day. Good job on the SX-750 as well. I've got a 939 and 1010 as well as a 980. Haven't found a 50 series yet. Have you redone the electronics on yours? You might be surprised by the difference with new capacitors. Really makes them old Pioneers sing.

Regards,

Ron.

Thanks! Sounds like you love Pioneer receivers! I had an SX-450 back in the day. This SX-750 I got last year from the original owner, a non-smoker. All I have done to it is clean it, de-ox it, and relamp it. I may take your suggestion on the new capacitors, but it sings pretty good now. I'm looking for a Pioneer quadraphonic receiver next!

Original owners are the way to go. The SX-1010 was from an original owner, his widow let me have it for $150. It had been sitting in a closet for many years but sits in honor now. The 939 was not, I got it off the auction site and it had been dropped. The fuse holder was smashed and the antenna was broken. It's all good now though.

I'd love to get into quad, never could afford it back in the day. Nobody I knew had it so I have no idea what it is like. I've been curious for forty years. It may never be though, I've started getting the "you've got more stuff than you can use now".

Good luck on the hunt and let me know how you like quad.

Regards,

Ron.

Here's my story: I got a killer quad setup when I was in the Navy, 22 and single (money was burning a hole in my pocket).I was in the Philippines, and the Navy Exchange price was low. As an example, the Akai speakers were only $60.50 apiece, so 4 of them didn't break the bank. Anyway, a year and a half later most of my stuff was stolen. So thirty -five years later I discover all this vintage electronics in the on-line auction site. So I have replaced everything that I had (except the 8-track tape deck)and restored it. Nostalgia, you know? First good thing I ever bought with my own money. I love to play it, but I do not have much quadraphonic material to play. I have five CD-4 LPs and one SQ LP. But I like playing any good music through the four speakers on vinyl. The other problem with quadraphonic is they only made those records for about 5 years, which greatly limits the selection of music. But you can play stereo through the matrix decoder and get a simulated surround sound, so it's somewhat useful.
I might have tried to replace the tape deck(Akai CR-80D-SS)too, except it was so good it has become a somewhat pricey collector's item. Hope this has been of interest.

Very interesting. Sorry to hear about how you lost your original stuff. When I was in Okinawa many years ago, two young men in my squadron were caught with stolen gear. All kinds of stereo equipment and televisions. Seems they had been breaking into the marine barracks across the way. They were being guarded by the marines for a few years thereafter. What I couldn't understand was that they brought it down to have the military ship it back. They always check serial numbers on all your gear before they accept it. Those two should have mailed it back to California.

I discovered this stuff while trying to fix my turntable. I was surprised to see the old stuff still around. I don't know why but I was sure it went to the junk yard years ago. Now I can have all the stuff I dreamed about back in 73 and such. I had a catalog of Pioneer gear and used to stare at the SX-1010 and CS-99A speakers and dream I could buy it. Now I have them both. I haven't gotten the tape deck or the Garrard Zero 100 that was in the catalog. I'll keep looking though.

Ron.

I loved those speakers, too. I did get the Zero 100. That is the turntable that was stolen. But I have one back now! How does she look?
