Considering what can be bought new for that money (the dynavector is as much new as my entire main TT!), I think I have done very well, and am very chuffed about the performance of both decks (the Thorens especially is miles better than it was in standard form).

I am sure the next rung on the ladder (for both decks) will easily reach into four figures to get a big improvement in performance.

Hi

One Garrard 301 (the first), UKP0,75, no arm, the next two bought together some time later, UKP30.- for both, 1 Micro Seiki BL51 for about UKP60 with a Micro arm but in very poor condition and now like new.

Others like my Rega Planar Mk3 with Lustre arm +-UKP80.- and about 6 or 7 others at an average price of +-UKP90-.....the law of diminishing returns setting in.

I've never added it up either. The trouble is I used some bits in p/ex against others. Anyway it breaks down something like this:

Actual deck with two arms and Linn mat: £1000

Achromat: £50

Modifications to Well Tempered style arm: £15

Second round of mods to above: £10

12" SME hybrid arm: £150

Handmade Corian riser for above: £5

Straightthu gold-plated silver I/C: £65

Cones under motor: £15

Pickering clamp (seldom used): £18.50

Ortofon 530 cart (part of a deal): Free

Grado F1+ cart (ditto): Free


So that adds up to a scary £1328.50 although there are some subtractions

Sale of Linn Mat: £12

Trade in of second arm against SME: £65

Err, that's it I think.

So that's a total price of £1211.50 although I did get £600 for my previous deck and in the last year have managed to accrue an additional 4 free carts as parts of various deals so it's not too bad.

Was it worth it? Hell yeah! I've got a deck that makes people's jaws drop before they've even heard it. It's going in for another round of mods soon, I'm going to get the treacle in the suspension pots changed for oil and a hole put in the sub chassis so the motor sits on the wood below the deck. After that I'm going to sell the SME hybrid and get a handmade 12" inverted unipivot.

I guess I do have a considerably larger investment in vinyl but I excluded the carts, the money spent on refurbishing tt's (my own labour and outsourced materials) and I did spend a fair amount of money on my collection of carts. The esteemed poster I think - confined replies to tt's only?

If all the ancilliaries are added (amps, pre's, pre pre's, cable, maintenance, gadgets, spares etc, I WOULD BE SHOT UNBLINDFOLDED AND WITHOUT CEREMONY AT DAWN TOMORROW. I've aleady been asked: 'If you peg tomorrow, where can I dump the rubbish'. Well, we'll have to see about that.

And THAT cart's price has been determined by importers and retailers and I do have mixed feelings about it...

I forgot about what's in the black bag on the broom cupboard - an unrestored but mintish 401. It came with a mediocre Jelco arm and is still resting, awaiting attention. The guy was clearing out his father's house and called to ask if I'd like to buy a Shure ME75ED cart. I nearly declined but went as my curiosity got the better of me. On the way up the steps, I saw the box and the 401's chocolate chassis sticking out. I bought the cart (didn't really want it) and remembered it was Thursday - rubbish day and asked about the contents of the box. I guessed right - it was due out for the rubbish truck.

I made an offer of around R10.- (UKP1.-) for the contents of the box and got it.

Btw, those days are over forever - even here. Now they call you and offer an all plastic fully automatic, faked removable h/shell, cracked and vomited on, broken hinged, ratty 'heirloom from my late dad' tt for 'only' UKP250.-.
