Yes. But what we call stereo is a shortening of 'stereofonia', so the prefix stereo means tridimensional, fonia means sound.

And it's actually an effect. In italian literature, this effect is given by 'more than one' sound sources in order to recreate the tridimensional sound we can recognize with our ears (horizon???).

I think that it was first used to sell something different fron mono ;-)

Of course we call stereo everything that has 2 channels, also the ghetto blaster that cannot reproduce a proper tridimensional sound; I call stereo my system.
Is it HiFi??? Well it's the HigherFi I can effort right now...
Is multichannel 'stereo'? In words yes... but I have only two ears.
Of course sound can come from every point around me but music is usually played from only one front: in front of me. So for music, 2 'stereo' channels are enough, no more, no less.

Great to know ( All of the Above), and maybe mono is derived from Mono a Mono, or, monkey to monkey (in Spanish).

At least, the Tarzan Yodel is more effective in Mono, instead of Electronic Stereo. It's the mono recording from 1938 by Johnny Weismuller (please correct me on all counts if I'm wrong, avole).

PS- you can look up "Weismuller Tarzan Yodel" in YouTube.

If the yodel is more solid in mono - does it then count as "stereo" (solid)?

@ dlaloum,

True! One would then need to know in which direction the tree vines are moving, and the travel speed to the next tree.
