If it was very quiet then it really wasn't working was it ? It needs an amplifier or receiver between the TT and speakers. If it has RCA connecters, rather than speaker leads then thats another clue to suggest you need an amplifier.
The fact that there was any sound at all suggests that the turntable may have a built-in pre-amp, which makes choice of amplifier or receiver much simpler.
