Rega RB300 upgrade rating

Postby beto » 24 Sep 2006 00:17

Hi all Rega users and tweakers,
wich upgrade will means a more dramatic improvement on the Rega arm:
1.-Changing the counterweight (for example Tecnoweight)
2.-Changing the wire, internal and external (for example Cardas)

As a datum: Origin live page says:
structural upgrade...............70
rewire.................................12

Best regards,
Beto

I'd agree that counterweight mods have the biggest effect on overall presentation, although rewiring is definitely worthwhile if you want to wring the last bit of detail out of the arm. However, do it wrong and increase friction around the pivot point and any benefits will be easily lost

Hello,
I also agree with the original assesment, from observing the OL mod of my RB-250, with counterweight and both wiring mods (internal and external). The internal wiring mod also adds a noticable degree of sturdiness, because the wires take more abuse without breaking...that is, abuse from frequent cartridge changes, such as I do.

Hi Jas,
well, I will like to rewire my arm and that topic is the one I'm a little worry: how to avoid friction (well, increase) on the pivot.
I will do forst the structural upgrade, btw.
Hi bauzace50,
do you believe that Cardas wire has the same sturdyness than OL? What's about detail? Cardas vs. OL internal and external? I'm planning the one run direct from headshell to RCA's plugs

Hola Beto,
I have no personal experience with Cardas wiring, and therefore, no opinion on it. But I certainly like the Origin Live wiring! Moving coils and moving magnets in my collection all sound very well, with no anomalies to be noticed because of the wiring.
It is a true pleasure to be able to exchange cartridges knowing that the wires will hold up without breaking! You appreciate this after having to strip wires and resolder cartridge tags almost every cartridge change!
Good luck on your mods, regardless of which ones you choose. But I feel that counterweight and wiring are both worth doing.

a rb250 having the plastic stub may benifit from a new rear weight more than a rb300 (it already comes with a steel stub)
and on a rb300 if you use a MM cart then the origonal rega decoupled rear weight may have some advantages over some

improving the internal and external wire does wonders to both these arms
my estimate is below(just about everything u do to a rega "changes" the sound but just coss its changed doesnt mean its better :D

new rear wieght (variuos).........40
new internal and external wires .......60

hope that is of some help

best wishes for now

Hi all, Like a lot of people i carried out the two mods at the same time (technoweight/incognito), it then becomes more difficult to say which brings more improvement, but j7`s 60/40 seems about right to me,and if anything i would lean towards 50/50. both mods make a big difference.,especially to the RB250.
