Rek-O-Kut Free To Good Home

I'll get the details tomorrow. It has a Shure tone arm, and dates to mid Sixties.

I would be happy to provide it a good home and the love which it deserves.

Thirds if the other two don't pan out. If shipping is a problem, I'm relatively close.

Hi,

Umm, yes, shipping. I've not yet looked into that yet, Coffee Phil, how badly do you want it? If shipping gets much North of $10 I'd like some help.

It's a Rondine 2, and I can post some photos if you want. If not for my sister (who sold the AR 2a speakers for $10), I'd have a whole 'first rate' mid sixties stereo (HH Scott amp and tuner).

Thanks,
Ed

Hi Ed,

Well, I want it but can't honestly say that I need it as I have a nice DD turntable with an SME arm. I have a GE RPX cartridge with a new stylus assy. That cart is not a happy combination with my SME. Since some claim that the RPX is mono nirvana. I want to try it. I am seeing the Rek-O-Kut as a home for the GE cart.

I would expect to pay the shipping. Ny zip is 95682. Is there any chance that you could get some idea what that may cost.

A picture would be nice to get me all excited.

Thanks,

Phil

Shipping almost certainly will be 20 or 30 bucks minimum, but I imaigne that any of the potential recipients would be happy to pay the complete cost and then some. But shipping tables in order that they get to their destination is good shape is a bit of a challenge, and I'm sure that who ever gets this would be happy to advise about, and pay for, a little extra TLC in packing.
I'm happy for whoever gets it, but I'd hate to have them recieve a bashed up table. And packing is a bit of a challenge -- not enormous -- but throwing it in a box with some crumpled newspaper (as too many people do) is probably about the same as taking it to the dump, only it costs more.

Thanks for bringing thiis up Nat.

I would most definatly be willing to pay more for a careful and knowledgable packing job.

I would expect the turntable to survive the trip with some sort of care in packing. I am not familar with the Shure tone-arm. I would expect it will need even more care. If it is now any good it would be a shame to degrade it in shipping.

OK, a photo it is:

I've not yet investigated to see if it can be tightened down for shipping, and I certainly understand that concern. I'll get back to you when I figure out that aspect.

I hear appropriate noises when I turn it on, but the belt has been long gone.

Hi Ed,

Now I'm like a kid waiting for Christmas. I thought these were idler drive machines but belt drive is even more desirable (to me).

I'm guessing the best thing to do is to remove the tone arm and wrap it seperatly. Also it is probably good to lift off the platter and wrap it seperatly. The bearing well should be plugged to avoid losing the ball bearing.

Thanks,

Phil

I have one of these with the old Rek-O-Kut arm. The bearing spindle is a massive thing with an oil groove, and the motor is a Pabst. IMO, the real value is if you want to use the platter, bearing and motor in a new plinth with a modern tone arm. Polish the edge of the platter with Mother's Mag Wheel Polish from the auto store. These Rek-O-Kuts are Great Stuff!

If I am lucky enough to win this, after getting it up and working I want to pair it with my GE RPX cartridge. I have an old Audax arm which will work for that. If the Shure arm works out with the RPX I'll use it. They look a bit "plastic kid phono" but I get the idea that they are decient arms. If the Shure / RPX pairing is a happy one I'll be looking for spare Shure headshells so I can use other cartridges.
If none of that works out I have a Grace 940 sitting around.

I will probably refinish the wood base, do the least invasive clean-up to the plinth, and do what you suggest to the platter.

S/N 1711

I'm up to my ass in alligators, so it will be a bit. I'm keeping my eyes open for a suitable box(es).

Ugh, just discovered that there's no TT to amp cable. Thanks go to my 'hyper efficient' sister on that one. Damn.
