Story Of A System

Postby Officerpup » 04 Aug 2011 10:45

It was back in ’83 when I bought my first ‘proper’ sound system, from Hi-Fi Corner on Rose Street in Edinburgh.

After a bit of hum-ing and hah-ing, I settled on:

Michell Focus One with ADC Alt-1 arm and an A&R cartridge into a
    Creek 4040 amplifier into
Monitor Audio R-252 speakers on low stands.
With Aiwa cassette deck added at some juncture, this served me well and, like my records, books, cameras and guitars stayed with me after my divorce in '92.

Only a month or so after leaving the marital home, however, some lil’ darlin’ went and liberated my cameras, guitars and CD’s, along with the amplifier, speakers and cassette deck, leaving the vinyl and turntable – bless’em

A dear friend donated a NAD 3120 amplifier and I bought a pair of Wharfdale Series 5 Diamonds and some Apollo stands to get things going again. Then, at some juncture, I swapped the A&R for an Ortofon Super OM10 cartridge and, a few months back, swapped the Wharfdales for a pair of Tannoy Mercury M2’s, which another chum no longer had use for, and it’s that system which I enjoy today.

A month or so ago, the urge to consider upgrading the system came over me and, after a perusal of some mag’s, I decided to eschew full-scale replacement and, instead, set about tweaking the system to maximise its potential.

To that end, I’m proposing to:

Return deck to Michell for full service and Focus One S upgrade (motor noise being a worsening problem over the years)
Have the NAD 3120 serviced and tweaked by Fidele Audio
Replace the stylus with an OM-20
Fill the speaker stands with sand
Add internal bracing to the speaker cabinets

Expectations are that an already very musical system will be that little bit more open, with improved detail and a tighter bass but time will tell!

Any thoughts or comments on these proposals are very welcome.

I think for the cost of servicing the 3020 plus its used value on ebay you could get something altogether better.

Careful secondhand shopping with that money could get you a Cyrus II plus the PSX and that will take you up several notches.

I'm not knocking the 3020, it's a very capable amp and was a bargain at its price point but there are a lot of secondhand things better than it for not a lot more.

Just my $0.02.

Thanks for that suggestion - I'll certainly look into it :)

One point with the amplifier, though, is that I really appreciate the NAD having a mono switch (I listen to a significant number of mono recordings) and 'loudness' switch.

Oh, and having seen the subject come up a few times on the board, would swapping from a plastic to a magnesium headshell help matters - I'd imagine it would be a lot stiffer, but would that be a good or bad thing?

So much still to learn!

Well, it's going back to Michell for (probably) a new motor but they're unable to do the 'S' upgrade.

So, anyone know what the 'S' upgrade consisted of? As far as I can discern, it's only a minor modification.

I have a mono switch on my pre amp and though I listen to lots of mono albums, I almost never use the switch.
