Removing Platter From Lenco Gl55 ?

Postby Ldg » 07 Aug 2011 11:18

I've read the general later-model lenco method - pull platter up symmetrically up and hit spindle (hard) with hammer.

Before embarking on what seems a bit brutal, just thought would check the same applies to these early lencos? The platter will lift about 5mm before hitting what seems like a hard limit. I have to say, it doesn't feel like malleting it it will work........

I don't want to damage the spindle, or the bearing.

Any help appreciated, thanks. I think the GL55 bearing/ platter is common to all the 'light' (if you can call it that) steel lenco platter models. The GL55 dates from perhaps 1958 or so. I'll let you know if I can get the platter off !

Hi ld

Never hit with a metal hammer. I use a very small hammer with hard plastic strike surfaces. You can also use a small block of hardwood. The method is to lift the platter with one hand and strike the spindle crown with a single 'medium' blow. A prior soaking with penetrating oil around the spindle will also help.

There's a pic in my gallery of my preferred tool which I will post here.
The weight of the little hammer is only 150g.

Thanks, BA.

Delicate application of the soft hammer did indeed seperate the platter and spindle nicely, without incident.

Much appreciated.
