It's a beauty, like taking a caterpillar and turning it into a butterfly.

Good listening =D>

Not An Xa, But A Ta

Postby cmfast » 06 Aug 2011 20:40

Finally had my AR-TA off the shelf for rearranging so I thought I would snap a couple pics.

Picked it up off local CL for $20, found a headshell bought a new belt and it worked very well.

Since then I have installed one of DDarch's thrust bearings, hand polished the spindle, replaced the RCA outs,

Not An Xa, But A Ta (Or Is It Tt)

Finally had my AR-TA off the shelf for rearranging so I thought I would snap a couple pics.

It's an early 2-motor version, 33 rpm only, with a solid wood base.

Picked it up off local CL for $20, found a headshell bought a new belt and it worked very well.

Since then I have ...
-installed a custom thrust bearing
-hand polished the spindle
-replaced the RCA outs
-Dynamat Extreme on plinth
-Quiet-Kote on the platter and sub-platter
-removed the bottom cover and made a custom open frame bottom
-removed cueing damper on arm and made custom arm support
-modified headshell for lower VTA and through bolts (nylon)
-polished and damped drive pulley

Serial #, 04490
Currently running a Grado/Red w/ no hum issues after grounding the T-bar.

I use this deck in the living room so it's mostly for show or conversation piece. It may not look like much, but it works really, really well. People are always surprised when I put an album on.

My main deck is a modded 1984 AR "The turntable", which I will try to post pics of as well.

Hiya, first post. First XA rehab.

eBay special....someone had apparently tried glueing down the foam mat years ago, the plinth was in good shape physically but dirty and discolored, the base had ancient tape residue in various spots...but it runs steady.

Lots of elbow grease, Danish oil on the base and that's Rustoleum truck bedliner on the plinth, not quite as glossy in person. Considering painting the headshell black to match (with paint, not bedliner).

Where Can I Get One Of These Cork Mats?

Postby Rockin Ramsey » 23 Sep 2011 18:02

Hi Guys,

I like these cork TT mats, with the plastic layer underneath the cork. Please tell me where I can get one.

Thanks, Craig

Look for coasters for potted plants. :)

Just completed another AX and thought you may want to have a look.
This one has a ES subchassis with linn springs and Marc M. perches.
Table was completely refinished with new switch, wiring, caps and new
Hurst 3 watt motor.
The Grace arm with the Shure Type III really sounds good and is real
improvement over the stock arm with the same cart.

I guess I should have re-sized the pics first...one of these days I'll learn to use these things...who am I kidding :?

Here's one of the whole table.

Here's another with a Sumiko MMT arm and a Shure M97 cartridge, first time I've heard the Shure sound so good - must be the arm.

Hi Stefan: Long time no talk. What are you using for feet on these latest XA builds?

Hi Scott, Using 1 1/2" rubber feet that sit a little more then 1/4" high under the tables bottom cover.
